Mens 2s beat Fareham 2-1
Men’s 2 hosted Fareham today at Heath End , and it hadn’t been the best build up to the game , at least 7 regulars out and still only 10 players on Friday night wasn’t the ideal prep.
We found an 11th player on Friday night Aaron Straker , but we still only had 10 players at the start of the game as Robert Corbin landed from America this morning and was asleep at home !
However with that pre amble we were expecting Fareham to be a tough opposition above us in the table.
The whole game was a very even affair , helped when we had 11 plates once Rob got there, and we managed to convert our first short corner with Max Long at right post deflection from a drag off Aaron
We survived a few shorts at the end of the half and Fareham had a goal disallowed for be scored from outside.
2nd half we knew they would start strong and they did scoring a goal early doors. Undeterred we kept playing our game and were rewarded when another short corner was slotted home after the breakdown by Robbie Alison Close
2-1 final score and if that was offered on Wednesday with the player situation we would have taken it but felt better earning it
MOM Rory Catherine Whelan back to back awards after another sterling performance at centre back. DOD Robert , I don’t have an alarm clock, Corbin!
Unbeaten in 4 weeks next week away at Gosport
Ladies 5s bear Portsmouth 2-0
A somewhat depleted Ladies 5's travelled down to Portsmouth at lunch time today and despite the slow pitch and unorthodox playing style of the oppo we came away with another solid win
2-0 the goals from Juliet Jones and Nicola Chaplin which frankly should have been 3-0 as a wonderful strike in her debut match from Emma D went into the back of the goal on the stroke of half time (sadly it was disallowed)
A huge shout out to both Helen Kenna and Di T for helping to make us 12 on the day and doing wonderful things on the pitch despite their various injuries, as well as to Charlotte Clive for doubling up yet again
A shout out also to Elena Reggler in goal who didn't see the ball at all for the whole match - luckily she was wrapped up warm.
Player of the match was a tricky one this week, so much so it was equally split 4 ways between Emma D, Juliet Jones Charlotte Clive and Ianne Delos Reyes - well done ladies
Another wonderful result under our belts, onwards and upwards ladies 5s
Ladies 4s beat Bournemouth 3-0
Ladies 4s took on Bournemouth this morning, we scored from a short corner in the 2nd minute (Rosie), Clive scored in the 4th minute and Rosie scores again in the 8th minute. Following that, our minds were no longer on the game but we managed to survive with a 3-0 win. Thank you to Di, Nicola and Ianne for helping out and Darren Harrison and James Elliott for umpiring.
MOM went to Rosie for great running on and off the ball and DOD also went to Rosie for being unable to dress herself.

11th December
Ladies 5s lose 2-1 to F&E in a tightly contested game.
This was a classic game of two halves. The first half was a well fought even battle with A&F surviving the first ever penalty flick against them - well saved by Catherine. With post Christmas energy levels coping with the first thirty-five minutes, A&F matched F&E moving the ball back and round with great aplomb! A&F did a great job of limiting F&E's options, closing them down and making it difficult for them at free hits. In the second half their superior numbers and experience started to tell with F&E soon scoring a goal which started at the back and was efficiently and quickly moved up the pitch and into the goal. Nevertheless, A&F battled on and thanks to some great running by Erin who managed to retrieve a ball which F&E probably thought was heading for the backline, Erin then beat a player and got the ball across the D for Suzy to neatly sweep into the goal. But still F&E kept coming at us and as we tired so we just could not get the ball into their half and keep hold of it long enough to build an attack. Catherine made another magnificent save jumping up into the air to bat away a lopping shot headed for the goal - even their umpire could not help commenting on it. We gave away a lot of short corners and inevitably F&E scored their second from one of them. A&F kept up the effort but could not get past a team growing in confidence and making good use of their four subs. "Pocket rocket" Ianne had a great game screaming up and down the wing scaring many a defender with her speed, Beth on the other side was using her skill to beat players and link up with Alicia who played the attacking midfielder taking on countless opposition players. Nicky read the game really well double teaming and sweeping up many a ball, Gillian, Jemma and Olivia kept going at the back despite being under pressure for most of the second half.  "Clive" played a great game up front linking with Suzy and both were unlucky not to get more goals in the first half. Captain Gerri was as ever running her socks off in the middle (and almost scored with a great short corner hit right at the start of the game) and did her best to rouse the team when needed. A great effort and although the loss was disappointing it was nothing to be ashamed about. A good team effort with man of the match shaded by Ianne.

Mens 2s beat Winchester 3-2
Mens 2s travelled down to Winchester for the first game of the new year. It started off slow as both teams tried to find their touch. Max Long scored towards the end of the first half allowing us to go into half time 1-0 up. Winchester came out strong and scored from a short corner making it 1-1. Almost immediately after Alan Coote played a great ball into the D allowing Ollie Yelland to deflect it straight into the top corner making it 2-1. However, Winchester came back hard again and scored a deflection within 5 minutes through the legs of Matt Cobbold. The rest of the game was hard for both sides with equal chances for both teams. A ball from Tom Hunt and quick thinking from Chris Edwards allowed Ollie to score with the final hit of the game.
Final score was 3-2 win for us.
motm - Ollie for 2 goals

Ladies 3s lose 3-1 to Yateley
The ladies 3s had their first match back after the Christmas break away against local rivals Yateley.
Being first match up, there was an eager queue of cars outside the gates to the car park but it was Yateley who were the quickest to wake up from winter hibernation scoring after only a few minutes. After that it was all a bit of blur I'm afraid although I vaguely remember Emily saving from a good short corner routine only for Yateley to put the ball away in the follow up with an excellent strike. Something else happened to put Yateley 3-0 up at half time.
With half time jelly babies missing from Fia, we still managed our sugar hit whilst Katja encouraged us with words of wisdom of what could be improved and pointed out that we had had our opportunities and the match was still on for us to take.
Well, we won the second half 1-0 and we'll take that. Jo put the ball away well and we could have had more with at least 2 balls stopped on the line. Other events included Jo being taken out in the D and Emily making some good saves and the defence clearing from the line.
Final score 3-1 to Yateley. A number of people got votes for MOM showing the great team performance again but finally Mary won the votes and Fia almost had a clean sweep for donut after the missing half time sweets.

Ladies 2s vs. Yateley 1s @ home. 4-0 loss
First league game of the season and we started with determination against this team. The first half started strong with Imogen and Emma playing well together up front, receiving long balls from Penny but the Yateley keeper kept the goals from us. We battled it out in our defensive area but with a couple of short corners and another goal, they were ahead by half time 3-0.
Having agreed that our performance was not as bad as the score reflected, the second half was definitely our game. With 2 players down due to injury, Charlotte was put up front and played as a high forward creating some opportunities for the attack and with so many consecutive short corners we deserved some goals. Despite this, we conceded one more goal to make the game a 4-0 loss. All in all, a solid team effort and a lot of motivation for some wins.
To add to this, it was our captain Helens last game for us this season 🙁 good luck with the knee op, we can't wait to have you back! Also, thank you to Di, Libby and Catherine for playing for us this week 🏑❤️
MOM: Imogen
15th December

Ladies 3s beat Salisbury 1-0

The Ladies 3s trekked down to Salisbury for the last adult away game of 2019, some taking the scenic route via Stonehenge.
We started well, taking an early lead with a great strike from Di at a short corner which Ridgie helped over the line.
We continued to push hard during the first half, with a several short corners being awarded but we couldn’t capitalize so the first half finished 1:0.
After haribos and rousing half time talk from Katja we started the second half well. The tackling from Salisbury became a bit agricultural but we keep calm (mostly).
We continues to push hard but we couldn’t find a way to score. The last ten minutes it got a bit nervy, Ridgie had a goal disallowed ( no one was quite sure why) and they had several strong surges forward. However, ours defensive line held firm and the final score was 1:0 😊🏑
MOM Georgie for great Defensive work, Donut was awarded to Fenella for her Christmas Jumper.
Great to finish the year with an away WIN!!!
Ladies 4s beat IoW 301
Ladies 4s took on IOW2s and we did it! Whoop whoop a 3-1 win.
A short corner conversion (Sarah Rosie Oates) saw us take the lead and give us the boost we needed.
Today we saw great team play and everyone kept calm as our opposition slowly became more and more frustrated. The second half saw some wobbles initially, but we took back control. Two more short corner conversions one from Nisu and another from Sarah Rosie Oates. We’ll take that IOW as we finish for 2019! Thanks Ladies 4s for being a great bunch this season, we’ve made new friends, learnt lots and still have plenty more in us for 2020. Few photos of you all - you did steal my phone!
MOM to Emily Maskell, Suzie King, Sarah Rosie Oates and Sarah Sitwell.
AFHC L2 beat Salisbury L2 5-0
It was our last match of the year and we were determined to get a win.
The first half saw AFHC dominating the play and working well together, which put a lot of pressure on the Salisbury defence. We were in the D constantly and eventually the first two goals were scored from a persistent Alice. With a bit more time on the ball compared to previous matches it gave us confidence to pass the ball around and to build the play from defence through to midfield. Sammy played a key role in the centre mid position.
At half time the score was 4-0 and by the end of the match we had gained another goal – final score 5-0, with the other goals coming from Emma Porter, Libby and Greta.
It was pleasing to see newcomer Greta making an impression up front and working well with our other forwards.
This week we were quicker on the ball and kept the high intensity of hockey going right through to the end of the match and it was lovely to see us believing in ourselves. So overall a great team performance and so nice to see everyone smiling at the end of the match. MOM was awarded jointly to Alice and Greta for some great play up front.
U18/mums friendly
The U18 girls were due to play Winchester in the league today but Winchester pulled out late Friday evening. As it was too late to cancel the pitch and the girls were keen for a game a group of U16s and a few Mum stepped up so that we could play a friendly. The first session was pretty much the original U18s team against some U16s and the Mums. The U18s were great and won easily so we mixed it up in the second game with the U18s and the Mums playing the U16s. This was a much more even game.
We finished with some end of season games, cross bar challenge (except no-one could hit the cross bar) and then penalty flicks against Darcie and I. Winner of the penalty flicks was the amazing Nicky Chaplin. It was a great way for a lot of the girls to finish hockey for 2019 - many thanks to Malcolm and Samuel for umpiring and for all the parents who came along to support. Thanks also to Lily and Sarah for taking photos and David Lloyd for coming along to coach.

1st December 2019
Men’s 1s beat C&F 4-2
Men’s 1’s coming off a 2-1 win against Wanderers with the usual goals from Ian Metcalfe and Jonny Groves played against Camberley and Fbough. It was difficult conditions with the game being played so early on a cold day meaning the majority of players spent half the game playing on their backsides. However, it didn’t stop us and an early drag from Scott Perry saw us 1 up, then another goal after a nice move saw Ian score after deflecting a shot from Scott. Yet we did allow them back into the game getting one back. We were soon to put this right with quick fire goals from Scott and Johnny. A late p flick from Camberley meant it finished 4-2. A scrappy win, but a win is what matters, leaving us 10 points clear top of the table. Special mention to Andrew playing despite becoming a father of two the day before.
Men’s 2s lose 3-1 to top-placed Fleet & Ewshot
Aldershot 1-3 Fleet & Ewshot. It’s never easy playing the team at the top of the league no matter how much you prepare, however we managed to squeeze every bit of energy from each player on the pitch. Play was good throughout the team, but some players like Luke Warren, Alan Coote and Samuel Fuentes were key players in giving Fleet a run for their money. Our goal was scored by Sam which was well deserved and meant it was one of the worst results of the season for team leading the league. MoM - Sam for all around reliable, skilled play
DoD - Robert Corbin for his double injury
Ladies 1s  beat Haslemere 4-1
The match started well with the oppo playing the ball straight off the sideline. We took a while to build the play, but we managed to get the momentum going. A ball up Lou's stick, resulted in a ball to the face for Lou. She had three people check if she still had teeth, a brief stop on the sideline to personally check that she still had teeth, and she was back on. Some great team play, resulted in a deflection for Eloise. 0-1 AFHC. We continued to play well, with lateral passes across the pitch and even managing to have four round the back at our 16. The build up of play resulted in a pass from LuLu, a cross from Taz and another deflection for Eloise. 0-2 AFHC. We continued to attack, and Becky (our right back for the day) was in the D? A swinging shot, resulted in a ball to the neck for the opposition.
We stepped up our press for the second half. A storming run from LuLu, a strike heading towards goal and another deflection by Eloise (👣?). 0-3 AFHC. A great bit of defending, sent the ball to Taz, sitting at high forward who had the opportunity for a 1:1, unfortunately the dislocated knee the other end of the pitch took precedence and the run was cut short. We continued to put on pressure, but they broke through. Almost at the half-way line Loz made a "too last-ditch" sliding tackle, losing her stick and trying to pick up the ball instead resulting in a green and a few minutes off.  A great switch across the pitch resulted in another storming run for LuLu, another strike heading straight at the goal, and a tactical tap-in for Taz (gotta catch up with top-goal scorer Ella after all right?). Lulu's supporters, beeped their car horn to celebrate LuLu's second almost goal. 0-4 AFHC. The opposition broke, elbowing Phoebe in the head, leaving her a bit dazed, but play continued. In the last few minutes there were some questionable short corners, which made the score 1-4 AFHC.

L2 cup match today v Fareham:
First half we started strong with only 10 players. We had some opportunities and a short corner awarded. The ball went over the line as the whistle was blown for a foot on the line by one of our players. We then defended well but they got 2 goals before half time. Both were well worked goals. We came back fighting now with 11 players in the second half which was well needed. We played far better in this half with long balls getting through to the attack. When we got it through it worked well as Jo was able to go far with the ball. We then won another short with Penny striking at the top. Ball went over the line as clearly shown by the defender’s stick having to go past the post to stop the ball. The goal was not given but the umpires apologised after the game. We kept our spirit up and there were lots of amazing runs by all the players and some solid defending by backs. But to avail and they were able to score 3 goals nearly 4 but we had an amazing diving save by Catherine which made everyone gasp. Shocked. MoM goes to Penny for amazing hitting and runs, and to Chanel for all round amazing effort and running.
U14 boys beat Andover 7-2
U14 boys maintained their 100% record in the league with a 7-2 win away at Andover. 4 goals for Luke Upshon earned him MoM and there was quality on show throughout the park. There are still some things to work on but also lots that they can be proud about.

09/11/2019
Ladies 1s vs. Horsham
Once again it was a wet game. Horsham held possession for the first fifteen minutes but there was no goal threat. After a great drive from Nina the tables turned and we won a short corner. Unfortunately this bobbled over Lou's stick. The rain increased but we continued to attack well. The ball was won from their defence, and Fi's strong hit was unlucky to rebound off the post. In the last five minutes, a great drive from Chrissie and a solid strike across goal by Ella resulted in a tap in for Taz. 1-0 AFHC. Half-time. We put the Horsham defence under pressure with a high press, but they defended well. We continued to have some great breaks, with some good pre-scanning. Horsham won a short but this was well-defended by Loz. Nina made a great tackle and drove down the right, winning another short corner. The play continued to be end to end, but we created more chances. The last few minutes wasn't an easy watch from the sidelines, with some great last ditch defending.
1-0, 3 points for AFHC and a disgruntled Horsham! MOM went to Chrissie for some great drives and strikes
Under 16 girls beat Basingstoke 6-2
The under 16s put in another strong performance against a very determined Basingstoke team . Goal machine Libby scored 3, plus goals for Sophie , belle and Caitlin gave the girls a 6-2 win . Special mention must go to Darcie in goal , her shot stopping was outstanding. Well played girls and thanks Malc for umpiring .
Ladies 5s continue their unbeaten run
Ladies 5s took on Portsmouth 5s at the Army on a very (very, very, very) wet afternoon. From the beginning, AFHC took control of the game with some lovely wide passing and lots of shots in the D that failed to find their target. However, the pressure soon paid off with two lovely crosses in from Juliet and Erin being touched in at the post by Charlie and then a great score from a short from Gerri. There was relatively little for the freezing defence to do, but when called upon they were very solid and controlled the game nicely and Darcie had to make only one save in what ultimately was a very one-sided game. The ladies on both sides flagged in the last 15 minutes as hands grew numb and the rain really penetrated but by then the game was all but over. Final score 3-0 to AFHC 5s, continuing the team's unbeaten run this season and placing us joint top of the league in points terms but third on goal difference. Player of the Match Hannah Buckle for her amazing work firstly in unfamiliar right back position and then in the middle.
Mens 3s lost 2-1 to Petersfield
We lost several players to the 2s this weekend but the men’s 3s still should have had enough to put away an aging Petersfield 2s. They started strong but we weathered the storm and scored first, Luke Upshon tidying up a short corner routine. Our confidence that we were the better side was lacking today and inevitably they equalised to make it 1-1 at the break. We were much stronger in the 2nd half, with Rob Taylor and Hugo McCullough earning a MoM performance for controlling the bottom of midfield. They resorted to throwing aerials and long balls, all of which we comfortably dealt with. Despite the possession we couldn’t put the ball away ourselves and with 1 minute to go I was beginning to think we were going to drop 2pts here. It got worse. They scored, a ripper to be fair, and we felt like we had just lost the cup final. Gutted. Final score 2-1 to Petersfield.
Ladies 3s lost 3-1 to Winchester
Ladies 3s took on Winchester at home this afternoon. The first half of the game was all ours and 10 minutes in saw Shots awarded their first short corner. Ridgie’s masterful strike bounced neatly off the keepers pads onto Jo’s stick - she flicked it straight into the right corner. Nice work. Half time entertainment came from Ridgie who unexpectedly ‘rejected’ a Haribo, earning this week’s doughnut. Emily kept us in the game with an incredibly well earned MOM, making too many brilliant saves to count. Overall a 3-1 loss to a strong side but great teas from Jo and fingers crossed for better weather and a win next weekend.
Mens 2s won 4-0 against Fareham
Last week the 2’s played Salisbury, ending in a 3-3 draw.
This week the 2’s travelled to Fareham in search of a return to winning ways. Rob C ran though on goal, winning a P-flick which was converted by Luke. We soon got another as the ball was drilled towards the back post where I got a deflection making it 2-0 for half time. An inspirational half time talk from Captain Jamie led to a fast start in the second half. I took a second making it 3-0 after Josh played it through off the defenders foot. Our defence and midfield remained solid throughout with everyone having a very good game. After a great team move and some unselfish play from Rob C, I completed my hattrick making it 4-0. The defence remained solid and some good saves from Matt meant that he kept his first clean sheet of the season.

Ladies 1s Vs Barnes home - 12/10/19
After a strong warm up, we started quicker than last week. However, an established Barnes side put the pressure on, and we remained pegged back in our half for long periods. We successfully defended a short corner, but Barnes continued to apply pressure. Loz managed to stop a goal, unfortunately it was with her knee and penalty stroke was awarded. Unluckily the Barnes player converted. 0:1 Barnes.
We stretched our play and used our lateral passes well. Phoebe passed to Nina, who passed to Taz. Taz drove into the D, our first circle entry. The shot rebounded off the keepers pads back to Eloise, who pushed it far post which Nina successfully converted. 1:1. The play reversed and saw Barnes attack, Loz threw herself to the floor to stop a player, only to realise that they were well away from the 25. We still appreciated the commitment.
We had reached half-time and we decided to up our effort levels
After five minutes we broke away from the Barnes pressure. Libby ran it through the Barnes defence, passing it to Taz who moved round the keeper and the ball hit the backboard. 2:1 Aldershot. Fifteen minutes remaining. There was a scramble in front of our goal. Chrissy was nutmegged and the ball was in the goal. 2:2.
We quickly came back, winning a short corner. The ball went left post, the deflection was knocked off by Barnes defence. It was five minutes before before the end of the match. Barnes had pushed their players high. They cut the ball across the goal and deflected it far post. 2:3 Barnes.
Despite the scoreline we continued from last week with our high effort and commitment to eachother, and appreciated the support on the sidelines depsite the rain. The umpires and Barnes coach commented on how much we had improved in the last few weeks, so it was not all bad.
MOM went to Taz, for her runs and effort. DOD went to Lou Lou, for her lack of gumshield and saturated eyebrows. As she was not at teas, second place went to Loz (for lack of vital equipment and a self-inflicted injury) and Lou (for a few falls too many).
Tulse Hill away next week, we're ready for our three points

Ladies 5s beat Romsey 4-1 – 12/10/19
Ladies 5's travelled, well not very far..... all the way to the Army Astro this afternoon for the 'late shift'. A 16:00 push back, a soggy pitch and Romsey 4's awaited
To be honest there isn't a huge amount to say about the first half except that the team was AMAZING, great passing, positioning, tackling and constant determination all amounted in a 2-0 lead.
The second half was more of a struggle - lets put that down to the lack of Jelly Babies at the break, but eventually we were up 3-0. Tired legs and some fancy footwork from the oppo in the D resulted in a 3-1 score line 5 minutes from time, but, with Di's half time talk ringing in their ears the ladies managed to come together for one last assault and the final score ended 4-1
Goals came from Erin Carter, Charlie Stidson, Charlotte Clive and Bethany Sullivan
Player of the match went (very deservedly so) to Erin for some excellent work down the wing and in the middle of the field
So proud of the level of play from all the ladies today and very much looking forward to next week ONWARDS AND UPWARDS LADIES 🎉🏑

Ladies 3s beat Hamble 5-1 – 12/10/19
The ladies 3s took on Hamble this morning and came away with a well deserved 5-1 victory. Hannah, Katja and Jo scored in the first half. Some goals were from short corners, others were not. The remaining players were great. Hannah and Katja scored again in the second half. The other players continued to be great. At some point Hannah and Lucy got a green card each. One for stick tackling and the other for forgetting to remove a short corner mask. All in all, an eventful and high scoring game for the 3s. What a team! MOM: Hannah. Special mention to Lucy C for being awesome in goal and Graham for taking the 'interesting' jump shot!
Ladies 4s lost 3-1 to Portsmouth 3s – 5/10/19
Ladies 4s played Portsmouth 3s yesterday at home. We had everything going for us this week, a full squad, Malc on the sidelines and playing on our home turf, however despite taking the lead with a great first goal from Kate Punter - well done - we started to lose our positioning and a few errors allowed the opposition take the lead, ending the game with a 3-1 loss. You can’t knock the 4s for effort. The outcome might not always go in our favour at this point in time, but we have moments of fabulous hockey and I know as we learn and work together as a team we will start to get the wins we want. Well done to Lucy Cochran - a super star goalie. The Bogie Award to Georgia for forgetting to bring the award back this week.
6/10/19 Match report for U16 girls victory against Romsey 4-1
Today the U16 girls trekked over to Romsey for their first cup game. Many players were late out of bed and our 10:00 meet turned into 10:15 meet and for our Goal Keeper this turned into 10:29 (love you Darcy!). The first half started off slowly until one of their players got a ball to the head, allowing for us to have a quick briefing, which seemed beneficial as within the next two minutes there was a strike from the top of the D, touched on the post by Libby. Soon after Chloe took on the goal keeper and scored another goal. Great running up the line from Caitlin, Jemima, Alicia and Georgia supported by Birthday girl Ella and solid defending at the back by Lily B, Olivia, Hannah and Munira allowed for many breakthroughs in the first half. The second half was a little more feisty with Romsey players going for our feet rather than the ball, mildly aggravating certain members of our team:). We bit our tongues and carried on, rewarded by Belle’s goal, making it 3-0. More aggression from Romsey resulted in newly discovered Sweeper, Lily on the ground after battling with numerous players. Despite our strong press and quick ball transfers, Romsey had a breakthrough and scored their first (and only goal). Chloe sneaked our fourth goal, ending a combative game!
A massive thank you to Catherine, Jo and Nicki for your coaching, support and also tips on anger management. Final score 4-1 to A&F, MoM awarded to Georgia and Belle.
Bring on the next game!! Thanks also to Darren Harrison for umpiring. My MoM was Lily K who was outstanding as sweeper
6th October
U14 boys are top of the league! ... which maybe is news to them. This Sunday should have been our first league game but Yateley pulled out giving us an 8-0 walkover. This coach is not one to let them rest on their laurels however so I organised a friendly against national league club Wimbledon. It was a thorough examination even though it was only their B squad as they still packed talent throughout the squad and came away with a 6-1 win. This was no walkover however and we had several periods where we held our own and created enough chances to make the scoreline a lot closer. So 2 losses in 2 games does not look like a great start but I've seen enough here to know that there is quality in this team and we have a good chance of registering our first win proper against Alton next week. Everyone disappeared before we could do MoM so coaches choice this week. I thought Archie was a match for any of their team today today whilst Dylan Millar impressed but my vote goes to Jacob Cryer; he also narrowly missed out in the 3s game yesterday and this caps a great weekend's work.

Mens 6s lose 2-0 to Alton
Men's 6s faced Alton this afternoon. Given the 5s had drawn 3-3 last week it looked like a tough fixture. Alton turned out a strong young side. 6s was a side made up of experience, Deep Heat and enthusiasm! James Elliott was so enthusiastic he even brought his tactical board to show us his game plan! We started well and kept Alton's opportunities to a minimum In the first half. Strong defending and me having a good game kept the scores 0-0 at half time. The 2nd half we tried get the ball out wide and create chances. Unfortunately we couldn't keep Alton out for the game and two well worked moves lead them to scoring two quick goals. We continued to persevere but couldn't convert the few chances we did create. Mistakes lead to Alton getting a third but we left everything out on the pitch. Our new players Andy (who earned his first war wounds), Stuart and Ben got stuck in. Rory and Will ran throughout the game. Dave James gave lots of "encouragement" from the back Drew Powell made some decisive runs to the half way line before suffering from oxygen deficiency. The ever youthful Simon put in a brilliant performance (and got my MoM vote) James and Nigel Eastwood put in industrious performances. Tom Wilson endeavoured to create scoring opportunities. Right at the end we got a penalty corner but ultimately we couldn't breach the Alton goal. MoM went to Chris Kinal for having a very busy afternoon.
Ladies 3s drew with Yateley 2s
A new season and a new squad - the Ladies 3s took on Yateley 2s (cough cough bar the ones players they threw in the mix) and held our own in a tough, aggressive game - final score was 1-1, with a goal coming from Debbie Ridger we maybe should have got another but the outcome was 1-1 and for our first match as a new team, it was a good one! MOM was Cat Mountifield for sterling hard work - and DOD was Lucy Willis for various reasons but mainly Why Not!
Ladies 1s lose 5-0 to newly promoted Winchester
The Ladies 1s had a tough weekend of hockey but hopefully something we can learn from. We played the recently promoted Winchester who were an incredibly youthful looking team and unfortunately lost 5-0. After half time we were losing 2-0 but still in high spirits after a few excellent runs and break away plays from the forwards, special mention goes to Libby. Sadly, at the start of the second half they scored a goal off a short corner and kept the pressure on right until the end of the match. Lou and Loz however, had clearly taken heed of Jenno's Tuesday training session on how low you have to be to make a successful tackle. Whilst I think the rest of us were still feeling sorry for our hamstrings off the back of that session! As the second half wore on, we were unlucky to concede two more goals given we were starting to get to grips with the formation and the 16 yrd routines. In the last 15 minutes we secured 3 short corners and narrowly missed the last one. We made some very promising attacking advances and ended on a high note despite the scoreline. MOM went to Ella for her excellent skills on the pitch, her highly commendable endurance and her closing out of her player from the game completely. Big thanks to all those who came to support and to all of our sponsors as well for our beautiful looking new kit. Next week we will do it some more justice!
Ladies 2s lose 3-2 to Yateley 1s
The first league match of the season saw the Ladies 2s take on Yateley. The first half started off well with AFHC playing some good hockey and passing the ball well between defence and up through the midfield. Yateley took an early lead, but AFHC came back quickly with a ball being passed through to Harry who took her opportunity well in the D and scored. In open play the match was fairly even and Yateley’s goals came from some well executed short corners. AFHC did not give up and created some lovely moves throughout the second half, with Harry also scoring another goal. Alice played a key role in midfield, and the left and right midfielders kept battling. The final score was 3-2 to Yateley. MOM was awarded to Harry for her work up front and scoring two goals. With runner-up MOM being Alice.
Sep 14th 2019 - Ladies 5s beat Fleet & Ewshot 4-1.
Ladies 5s played Fleet & Ewshot in a pre-season friendly, winning 4-1. It was a typical start of season game, including the weather, which was ridiculously hot for those who had had the summer off! There was no end of enthusiasm and effort by A&F who were working out any rust and getting reminders about fitness levels! Despite the score it was an even match with a number of chances at both ends. A&F took their chances more effectively and perhaps benefited from 2 extra players as the game wore on. F&E scored first from rather messy play in the D with the ball just trickling over the line before being cleared. Up the other end, F&E's goalie made A&F work hard for their goals so it was that three of the goals came from lovely play into the D and then moving the ball across the goal for well positioned players to score. Alicia, Suzy and Izzy all scoring well-worked goals The fourth goal came from a cracking hit by
Gerri Besgrove at a short corner.  There was no team man of the match so the coach nominated Suzy Suzanne Reng who covered a lot of ground, was involved in everything in the D and even managed her first ever fully fledged hit at goal - all that practise has paid off.

WELCOME BACK 2019 - Aldershot & Farnham launched the new season with a fantastic Club Day on 8th September combining adult and junior games and drills. It was a beautiful day weather-wise and loads of juniors turned up including many players new to the club, who after having fun on the pitch signed up for membership. The BBQ was busy all day long with bacon rolls in the morning and burgers and sausages from lunch on. The Mens 1s played an exhibition friendly against Reigate Priory and later on the adult members enjoyed some mixed ability games.

Ladies 5s beat Basingstoke 7s 1-0 in a tightly fought contest but much deserved win
The Ladies 5s were back to their winning ways this morning, and what’s more beating Basingstoke 7s who were only one point behind us in the table at the start of the day
Not much more to say other than a massive congratulations to Jane Orchard (who scored our goal and her first of the season) and to Olivia G for being voted player of the match for some pretty natty stick work, getting past a southern league player multiple times, in fine style
I am massively proud of each and every one of us today, solid play in all areas of the pitch and excellent team work really played off for the 1-0 win
Ladies 1s drew 1-1 with Tulse Hill & Dulwich
An early start for the Ladies 1s too and a desperate scramble for GK kit due to a last minute drop out. Most squad members quickly got their excuses in as to why they couldn’t play in goal, Loz casually took it on the chin and kitted up.  The first half AFHC were under pressure early, though it gave Loz a chance for her first kicks of the game (she had helmet issues during the warm up). Settling down AFHC started to remember the passing play Aaron was asking for during training and led some strong attacks into the THD half. The Stewarts made it a family affair tearing up the left side of the pitch and Emma was unfortunate not to gain a couple of penalty corners as the oppo’s defence struggled to deal with her skills. AFHC’s team efforts paid off and won a corner which Sammy neatly slotted away to put the 1s in the lead. Unfortunately, AFHC then took their foot off the gas and allowed THD back in. They duly won a corner down the other end and a straight strike beat AFHC on the right post.  In the second half AFHC took it to them again, Rosie, Emma P and Wrenchy put THD under pressure every time they tried an attack and Phoebe’s skills were too much for them on several occasions. Ellie and Helen stuck to their players like glue and Sammy and Lou had them sewn up at the back. Eloise and Taz picked up some great through balls on the run. AFHC had plenty of chances, but couldn’t find the net. Neither team could find a break through, even when the THD Captain got a yellow for their men’s 5s refusing to stop warming up on the sideline. AFHC like to have a last minute scramble and this week was no exception. Thank goodness for super stand-in GK Loz who saved the team’s bacon with a classic takedown of the THD striker in the dying minutes. Another 1:1 draw, but a point we would have taken at midnight on Friday. MOM - Loz for stepping in and being great
Ladies 3s drew 1-1 with Trojans 4s
This week, the Ladies 3’s took on a very strong, fifth placed Trojan’s 4 side. The opposition started very well and small errors made by the team resulted in Trojans scoring in the first half. This made AFHC step up, even more determined to get a goal after half time.
Frances Kemp and Ellie Mooney held their own in midfield against Trojan’s strongest players, matching them in speed and beating them to 50/50 balls. Jen played a pivotal role as sweeper, commanding the defence and allowing play to always push forward. AFHC managed to equalise from a very well set up short corner between Fiona Carden and Caroline Bryant creating an excellent strike for Di. Man of the match today was tricky to chose with such a great performance from so many people but Caroline came out on top showing determination and key stick skills in the midfield and up front. Today AFHC showed great teamwork and came away with a well-deserved 1-1 result. A massive thanks must go to Darcie for stepping up after her Ladies 5’s game. She made crucial saves and always kept a cool head. Also, thanks to Chris for umpiring, Graham who was vital on the side line this week and to those who came to support us.
Ladies 2s lose 6-1 to Trojans 3s
Ladies 2s had a very sleepy start to the day this morning for an 8am meet to drive down to Trojans. Trojans came out strongly from the whistle and it was apparent that they had some very skilful players running the game. AFHC played some great hockey today and used their pivot players really well and switched up the play throughout. Some lovely passing in the middle and interceptions from the whole team. Trojans slipped a few in the goal but AFHC were then awarded a short corner which Ella managed to slap nicely past the keeper, our next short corner saw a strike from the top going high above the keeper’s head, but unfortunately was called a dangerous ball. Trojans managed to get a few more goals leaving AFHC with a loss, the score doesn’t reflect how well they played and the Trojans team that turned up was much stronger than the team AFHC played before Xmas. MOM was a draw this week with Jodie Hodgson for some lovely connecting play in the middle and Libby for some great drives upfront for penny’s bullet balls! All in all it was a great performance.
Mens 3s beat Portsmouth & Southsea 2-1
An unfamiliar third team travelled down to Portsmouth and Southsea. The game started and AFHC got off to a decent start with Adam C striking from the top of the D after 10 mins. AFHC somehow managed to not score again before half time. AFHC defended a long series of short corners which included a goal line clearance from Jimmy. After an inspirational half-time team talk from Faz about “not playing at their level” AFHC came out in the second half and immediately continued to play at their level. Midway through the second half AFHC actually won a short corner and after messing up the injection it somehow fell to Tom who finished by scoring through the keeper’s legs. From the pushback Faz decided to keep the game interesting by mis-trapping the ball and allowing their striker to have a 1 on 1 with Matt C in goal. Fortunately, their forward was unable to score so Matt helped him out by scoring an OG instead. The game fizzled out after this. MOM went to Adam for a solid attacking performance and his good goal.

Match reports weekend of 2nd/3rd March
Mens 2s win 2-0
This week we played the second Winchester team in our league, the one at the bottom not the top of the table! After a lacklustre warm up and ‘taking the biscuit’ according to keeper Mark Edgley, fines were issued accordingly, we started a little slow creating but also conceding a few chances! A fairly even half of some slow build up from us and them resulting in no goals to trouble the scorers at half time! Second half saw 3 goals scored! Firstly a nice finish from Robert Corbin who has developed nicely into a second 11 player! A reply from them bit scrappy nothing to special! Then a lovely solo finish into the bottom corner from Felix a new edition to the squad and fairly useful one at that! And that’s how it finished 2-1 not the greatest performance but 3 points non the less!
Mens 3s beat Salisbury 3-0
There’s not much joy in taking the trek down to Salisbury for a 4:15 pushback. Perhaps, having the time to write a match report on the way back is one of them. I’ve never had a good time here. It’s always raining, the pitch is akin to an ice rink and if you looked up the definition of ‘windswept’ I’m certain there would be a reference to the South Wiltshire Sports Ground. Perhaps others felt the same as there was a scarcity of available players this week. Forced to draft in experience in exchange for youth, this was a 3s side the likes we had not seen for a while. We started well and Lemmy grabbed himself a brace whilst Salisbury rarely troubled our defence. They picked themselves up a bit after half time, aided by several of our players gradually slowing up, but didn’t have enough to get a goal. I managed to get another and we limped to the final whistle. Final score a 3-0 win to us and my first at this ground. I’m still not looking forward to going back though.
Ladies 5s lose 1-0 to Isle of Wight
Ladies 5s reporting from the Ferry on the way home from the Isle of Wight. Sadly, we came away with a 1-0 loss but this does not nearly reflect the level of play. With a ridiculous 18 shorts against and a solid defence throughout we were on course for at the least a draw, however the hockey gods were not on our side and we lost control of the D in the last 10 minutes of the game, otherwise another strong performance from all concerned, despite being run around the pitch by a side considerably younger than the majority of us. Player of match went to Elena Reggler for some great work in goal (again) and some effective management of the defence (nice shouting!), and she is now the proud guardian of the new L5s player of the match trophy (if anyone could suggest a suitable name for him that would be great - all suggestions will be put in a hat and we will draw the winning name in a week).  Lots to build on and we will move into next week with a positive attitude. Onwards and upwards ladies
Ladies 1s draw 1-1 with Barnes 2
So, we started this week with heavy legs following on from two matches last weekend and two ‘light’ training sessions this week. However, we were soon into the flow of the game. The first half saw some attacking play from the shots, working our way comfortably up the field several times. Silky skills from Fiona and Phoebe started to make inroads into the Barnes defence. Practise made perfect as we delighted Aaron by bringing something from training into the match. Super line balls from Ellie and Helen found those runs from the forward line. We gained a couple of corners but couldn’t convert and our control and finishing in the final third let us down a little. However, our marking was tight, as we were directed by Sammy and uncharacteristically, we only had to defend one penalty corner. Despite all our hard work, a crash ball from Barnes into our D deflected off several sticks and found its way into our net, pretty much as the umpire blew for half time. The second half mainly took place in the middle of the pitch. Our tight marking and super stepping in front cut down every Barnes attack, unfortunately then finding our own players at times proved difficult. So, we found ourselves in deadlock, until that is Emma Stewart stepped onto the field and skipped past the entire Barnes team from 25 to 25 sending a super ball into Eloise. Lovely skill from Eloise bypassed the Barnes keeper and their last defender neatly kicked the ball into the goal to make the score 1-1. From this point neither team could find a way through and the match ended 1-1. MOM - Emma Stewart for her silky skills and assist on the goal.
Ladies 2s lose 6-0  to New Forest
Ladies 2s took the first home slot of today against New Forest. We knew this would be a hard game as they are currently second and the score last time we played them was one not to be mentioned but we approached the game with a positive attitude nonetheless. New Forest started strong from the whistle but we put the pressure on and showed some lovely hockey throughout the game, using what we have learnt at training but unfortunately today the opposition were just a stronger team and well organised which led the game finishing as a 6-0 loss. However, positives were that the score is less than the first time we played them and we did actually score from a short corner, Penny did a lovely strike however the ball was too high for the first shot which was unlucky. MOM was hard this week and actually over half the team got a nomination but Katherine Jackson-Challen beat everyone too it with her lovely connecting play in the middle and great reading of the game!
Ladies 3s lose 8-0 to New Forest
An early start to the New forest, the Ladies 3s had a strong start with multiple shorts won by Joelle Harrison in the first ten minutes, unfortunately none of them making it into the goal. The whole team battled hard throughout the game with endless running, however the opposition were well organised, strong and clinical in the D converting most of their opportunities into goals. Well played to all despite the loss, we are going into next week’s game with heads held high! MoM joint votes for Ellie Mooney and Frances Kemp for endless running, amazing leads and great interceptions!

Match reports weekend of 23rd/24th February
It's been a great weekend for our Juniors and Minis.
The under 16 boys beat Camberley and Farnborough 4-0. Camberley & Farnborough were very strong but about five minutes into the game Robert.C scored a tap in followed by another goal in the next 5 for the rest of the half it was mainly Aldershot taking shot after shot but the C&F keeper stopped them all. The second half started off slow with a few nudges from Camberley, but despite the February heat, AFHC kept their cool and pushed back scoring another goal. For the next ten minutes neither team where able to find the back of the net until Bobby as quoted by the opposition “ he’s all skill” managed to find it. The game ended 4-0 to Aldershot.
U12 girls beat Guildford 4-1, while the U10 girls A team continue their strong unbeaten run
U-10 girls A team continued their strong unbeaten performance having won the last ten games with only 1 goal conceded. Sunday’s results were a 4-1 win over Yateley and a 2-0 win over Alton. The Bs also played well and won both their games with some great passing out wide and good solid tackles in defence.
Men’s 3s win 2-1 against Southampton university
With just 11 men for the entire 70 minutes, the Mens 3s team worked hard for their 2-1 one win against Southampton University. The first goal came from Daz, set up by Lemmy, and gave the team a strong start against the young university side. Later in the first half, Southampton equalised from an interception in AFHC’s D, and it remained even until half time, despite an impressive reverse stick shot from Faz and a few attacking short corners.  Southampton started strongly in the second half, putting pressure on our defence and winning a short corner. Andy was able to clear the ball with a cross- pitch aerial hit, which was sent over the heads of multiple players. Despite being given a second opportunity to score, the solid back line and Matt kept Southampton from pulling ahead. The team worked hard move the ball up the pitch and maintain possession. Tom was able to turn a penalty flick into AFHC’s second goal and the score ended 2-1.
Ladies 5s beat Portsmouth & Southsea 7-0
Stunner of a match today for the Ladies 5s v Portsmouth & Southsea. Although the opposition were only able to field 8 players on the day they started brightly and almost took advantage of our sleepy defence within the first 5 minutes. Luckily our very brave Elena R (in her first match in goal) pulled off a cracking save at full stretch, and the ball flew off the outside of the post. Thankfully that scare woke up the whole team and we decided to play some hockey! By the end of the match, the defence had racked up another great save from Elena and a goal line miracle from yours truly (no idea how that stayed out!) but the real action of the match was at the front.  With some stunning passing and stick work from all involved we pushed past their defence a number of times ending up with a wonderful 7-0 win with 2 goals each to Charlie and Olivia and 3 for player of the match Georgia B
So we say thanks to those that helped us field 12 today and look forward to the Isle of Wight next week.  Onwards and upwards ladies
Ladies 4s draw in an injury-stricken match
Well the lengths some people will go to for a lie down ... Mary Buck taking one in the face for the team today – it was a brilliant game until that point! A very early start from all and the team in good spirits for Charlotte Clive’s first trip on a ferry .... the sun was shining and AFHC had a battle on their hand when IOW took the lead - however pulled one back thanks to a brilliant goal from Alicia Jo Taylor who scored from an incredible angle! AFHC had many more opportunities and apparently one did go over the line but it seems the umpire didn’t spot it ... anyway hit out / stick / ball / face / nose led to the game ending early and we called it at a draw! Sterling work team - POM was Alicia! Hero of the game was Dews.
Ladies 2s lose 4-1 to Southampton
Ladies 2s travelled to Southampton. AFHC started off strong with some lovely passes between the midfield and using their defence for back up, they switched the play from left to right throughout the game, this seemed to work well with creating space and giving Frances and Ella some lovely runs. Southampton came back strongly though and were very good at coming to the ball when AFHC were slightly asleep! The 2s one and only goal came from a lovely drive by Lily Karaceylan straight into the D and had a shot on goal which first of all deflected but she followed it in backed up by Ella and managed to get it past the keeper! AFHC fought hard throughout the game and with only one sub did get tired in the second half. There was some lovely hockey from everyone and they did the best they could but unfortunately Southampton just came out stronger and the final score was 1-4. POM went to Ella for some lovely play out of position in the middle.
Ladies 3s lose 5-0 to Waterside
Ladies 3s took the middle of the day slot at Heath End, against Waterside. With only 11 players half an hour before the game due to some players having to move up and illness striking some down, they managed to recruit Olivia and Georgia to be subs after their amazing game with the 5s and it was well worth it - brilliant play by all three of the younger youngsters (Olivia, Georgia and Saskia).
The whole team battled hard and gave the opposition goalie some work, but weren't able to get the ball passed her. On the day, they were outclassed and came away with a 5-0 loss.

Match reports weekend of 9th February 2019
Ladies 2s draw 1-1 with Romsey
After having their game cancelled last week due to snow AFHC were ready for action this week and knew it would be a tough match. The first half was end-to-end hockey, with Romsey putting a lot of pressure on the AFHC defence. AFHC remained strong with tight marking and good distribution. The midfielders were able to start connecting well and, in particular, Ella created some good runs down the left-hand side. As confidence grew the team started to play better hockey and it was great to see the movement of the ball between players in such a constructive way. Romsey continued to look dangerous on the attack, and Anwen made some great saves. The pace of the game was fast and furious with constant running. Just before half time Lucy took a ball to the head and despite wanting to stay on the pitch was advised to come off. So, at half time it was 0-0 and no goals conceded. In the second half, AFHC seemed more in control and were spurred on by our supporters on the side line. Romsey scored a great goal and for once AFHC knew that despite being down AFHC were still in the match. This meant that they continued to battle and played some lovely hockey. AFHC were awarded a short corner and Penny moved up from defence to strike the ball……and she scored!!!! From then on the team’s spirits were lifted and they looked the dominant side with lots of attacking moves and play within their D.  A few minutes to go and Amanda accidently broke down Romsey’s last attacking move…and then the final whistle…and AFHC had drawn 1-1.  AFHC’s reaction at the end may have fooled many into thinking they had won. But it was so satisfying to have drawn the match and so lovely to see smiles on everyone faces!! What a great team effort by everyone! MOM was awarded to Ella for some great play (both attacking and defending).
Ladies 3s lose 3-0 to Havant
Ladies 3s traveled down to Havant this morning for what was expected to be a tough game. The team started sluggishly, and the pitch joined in that mood as the rain started pouring down. It was a physical game and unfortunately the frustration of the situation got to some and AFHC didn't play their best game. There were lots of good passing moves, running on and off the ball and AFHC got into their D frequently, but just couldn't get the ball in the net. The opposition however did manage to score 3, leaving the final score a 3-0 loss to us. Not at all bad when you look at the statistics of the table!
MotM went almost unanimously to Charlie, for great calling to the defence and positional play in goal and a brilliant penalty flick save.
Ladies 5s draw 0-0 against Hamble despite having all the pressure
So another frustrating result this weekend for the Ladies 5s against Hamble, but with plenty of positive play to lift the spirits. The 5s were solid in all areas of the pitch, and with a defence-heavy squad this week were nonetheless surprisingly successful in getting into the opposition’s D. This resulted in lots of excellent passing and calling, some fab runs down both wings, and plenty of wicked shots on goal. Sadly, the work didn’t pay off this time and we came away with a 0-0 draw. The legendary L5s team spirit we help us will move on to the next match with positive thoughts. Player of match was split 3 ways between Nicola Chaplin Megan Holmes and Erin Carter - all worthy recipients. Special thanks to Jayne Key for standing between the sticks once more and to Victoria Storey for helping us manage the subs and team tactics from the side line. Onwards and upwards ladies!

Match reports weekend of 26th and 27th January 2019
Under-18 boys beat Havant 5-2
The U18s travelled down to Havant to face them in their 4th league game of the year. AFHC came into the game undefeated but knowing it would be a tough game considering their most recent results against them were 8-1 and 12-0 defeats. AFHC started off slowly and went 2-0 down to Havant within 7 minutes. However, they didn't let their heads go down and after some much better play Johnny scored a short corner via a defender’s foot to make it 2-1. They carried on playing well and Rob put a brilliant ball across to Tom who sent it into the top corner with a sublime deflection, making it 2-2 at half-time.
AFHC came out strongly in the second half and Havant started to lose their heads with a few cards. AFHC took advantage and carried on playing good hockey leading to a scrappy 3rd goal which came from Rob Corbin. AFHC then scored a well-worked goal originating in the defensive end with some great build up play and ending up with Max Lake hitting the post and Josh converting with a great first time shot from the rebound. AFHC carried on playing strongly until the end of the game and Johnny Thompson scored from a great short corner routine which involved Rob Jervis running around 2 of the Havant defenders and passing it to Johnny for an open goal. Final score was 5-2 to AFHC but unfortunately due to the structure of the league only the first half counted meaning a 2-2 draw. A great performance from everyone.
Mens 1s beat top of the league Andover in a fantastic game
Men's 1s faced top of the league Andover. After a disappointing 2-1 loss last time it was time for some payback. AFHC started strongly with the ball being played around the back confidently working out of a strong press. Shortly afterwards, a goal was scored from a P-flick given after a Simmo diving deflection from a short corner was stopped by on a foot on the line: Jamie Weston converted with ease. The remainder of the half was an even battle but AFHC still went into half time with a 1-0 lead. Havant started well from push back in the 2nd half and put AFHC under pressure levelling the score. However, AFHC responded quickly with another Simmo deflection from a short resulting in them retaking the lead. Special mention to Jonny Groves for working hard to win the ball back and win the short in the first place. They were very physical and Ewan Hammond was on the receiving end of a few big collisions. The final result was AFHC 2, Andover 1. Very good team performance today but MOM goes to Simmo.
Ladies 1s lose 2-1 to Wanderers
Ladies 1s took on Wanderers for the first league game after Christmas and held their own against the 2nd in the league, keeping the score to 0-0 at half time. In the 2nd half, an unfortunate penalty flick awarded to Wanderers resulted in a first goal to them, followed by another through open play. The ladies fought back hard and some nice passing play in the D resulted in Anna slotting it past their keeper. Score 1-2. It was an amazing team effort which showed in a 4 way tie for MOM - Anna, Ellie, Sammy and Kate. Great passing play, with everyone working hard for each other.
Ladies 2's lost 5-1 to City of Portsmouth
Another match where the final score did not reflect the effort put into the game. The first half saw some great hockey from AFHC with some supportive play and better communication throughout the team. AFHC’s midfield controlled a lot of the first half. Portsmouth went ahead with the first goal in open play. They managed one other goal in the first half but following some determined work by Ella and feeding the ball into the D, Libby scored to make it 2-1 at half time.  In the second half Portsmouth came out strong and were quick on the ball. They reacted quickly to every free hit and put AFHC under pressure. During the second half they scored 3 more goals - one of which followed on from Caitlyn taking a ball to the forehead in front of goal (should that have been a goal??).  It was a game with a lot of running off the ball and it was pleasing that we were breaking through into their D and creating opportunities. However, the final score was 5-1 to Portsmouth. Joint MOM was awarded to Becky and Ella.
Mens 3s beat Havant 5 3-1
A great result for men’s 3s today, beating Havant 5 3-1 at Heath end. Havant had beat AFHC 5-1 earlier in the season, and the team wanted to show the improvements they had made since then and were eager for revenge. With Roy the destroyer and Rory the whippet injured they had to go for a new lineup, with some of the older players filling in at the back and the younger players in midfield. These kids are good though and they demonstrated all their talents in a masterful display of midfield dominance. It’s a wonder the score was still 0-0 at half time. Havant rallied early in the 2nd but it wasn’t long before they lost heart and 2 slick corner routines gave AFHC a 2-0 lead, the latter a Tom Haworth-Edwards deflection that hit the roof of the net. Havant scored a good short corner of their own before Tom sealed it with a powerful strike
Ladies 3s draw 2-2 with Yateley 2s
Ladies 3s had a late pushback against local rivals Yateley 2s today. This did allow Kirsty and Kate to join them, giving us 13. Having lost to Yateley 4-0 in the first half of the season and knowing that Yateley are currently lying 4th, AFHC knew this would be tough. However, they were all determined to get something out of this game and build on last week's win. And they did coming away with a well-deserved 2-2 draw, both goals being scored by Fiona. Awesome result moving Ladies 3s up one place in the table. MotM was almost a unanimous decision for Charlotte - awesome defending throughout the match.
Ladies 5s lose narrowly to Romsey
Ladies 5's had a slightly and damp and VERY cold trip down to Romsey this afternoon. Great play from both teams made for a tight match at times but overall most of the play was in AFHC’s favour, that is aside from the goal Romsey scored within the first 5 minutes of the match, which took advantage of confusion in the D. AFHC dusted themselves off and put on a great show, pushing their awesomely robust defence and midfield with energy and passion throughout. Sadly, the result stayed 1-0 for the rest of the game as AFHC failed to capitalise on the time spent in their D. So, the L5's came away with their first loss in 2 games and only their 4th loss overall. Still sitting pretty at number 3 in the league and, despite the result this week, feeling confident for the upcoming games. Person of the Match was split 4 ways this week (a testament to the hard work put in by all) shared between Nicola Chaplin Charlotte Clive Jane Orchard and Ianne Delos Reyes - well done to all.
Ladies 4s beat Petersfield 4-1
A great game of hockey - some brilliant fluid hockey in the first 20mins, then a bit hairy – but AFHC took the lead c/o Nicola Lea and then Petersfield pulled one back. However, not to be beaten the final 15 minutes saw AFHC pile on an immense amount of pressure and get three past them despite their heroic keeper’s efforts - Katja Jackson bagged 2 and Fia Riglia - grabbed one and secured her MOM award!

Match reports weekend of 19th/20th January 2019
Fantastic festival today at Yately for our Mini Under-8s where all three teams did well. Great enthusiasm from our mixed experience, mixed age groups who braved the cold.
The mixed cup team lose the cup
AFHC’s mixed side travelled today to Premier League club Reading for the 2nd round of the Mixed Cup after last round win over Guildford. The pre-match talk was about how difficult the game could be against the opposition but hey it’s only Mixed Hockey and it’s only a bit of fun. With a few late call ups late last night including Ladies 1st XI coach Aaron we had a team! First blood went to Reading with them taking a lead in the first 10minutes with skillful play beating our defence. Undeterred A&F contoured to play good hockey cutting out Readings balls to their forward line and also using the width of the pitch and we equalised with a well worked team play goal with Max finding the back of the net. Things got even better when Samuel nicked the ball just into the Reading half resulting in a one on one with the keeper only to slot under the keeper for AFHC to take a 2-1 lead into half time. In the second half Reading came out strong and quickly scored 3 unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead. AFHC continued to play as a team using all players and after winning a penalty corner which the first strike from Sammy was saved and Chris followed up to beat the keeper near post. 4-3 ... could we be in it still ... within 2 mins Reading regained their 2 goal lead 5-3. AFHC continued to go forward and into the last 5 mins scored again with Evie prodding home a shot from Phoebe that was slowing up. 5-4. With 1 minute to go, AFHC scored the equaliser to take it to flicks through Jackson who deflected in a pass direct to the D. Great work from all the team to push Reading throughout the game. AFHC just came up short on flicks losing 4-2 but an enjoyable game. Thanks for the supporters who made their way over on a cold afternoon.  Cup dreams over for another year but good mixed team spirit as always.
U16 boys took a trip down to Andover
The game started off slowly with neither team able to find their flow. Until finally, the man the myth the legend, Robert Corbin tapped a ball in from about 3 yards out. He then went on to score another, and another, and another, and another promoting some incredible composure from about 30cm from the goal. Bobby Wollen, who was desperate for a goal, finally got through and finished the deal with a reverse hit straight past the keeper. Andover were beginning to push back, before Spike Stevens scored a tap in through the keepers legs. The second half was sloppy, with AFHC not knowing how to pass the ball. Finally, Lambo set Rob up for yet another tap in, which he converted. Final score 8-0 to AFHC. Top of the league. They celebrated with 80 Jaffa cakes! Goals: Rob C – 6, Bobby – 1, Spike – 1.
Mens 3s lost 4-0 to Basingstoke
An unlucky loss to Basingstoke today for the men’s 3’s. A good first half had score at 0-0. However, a drop in intensity through the second half led to 3 goals in rapid succession and despite several good attempts to come back the opposition sealed the win 4-0.
Another stunner from the Ladies 5s beating second in the table Alton 3's in great style.
After a 5-0 loss last time around against Alton 3s who are sitting near the top of the league, the ladies 5s were determined to come out fighting and they did. There was some amazing play throughout the match and in all areas of the pitch. Gerri was really on form with ... count them.....TWO goals and at the back Meg and Jemma Badger doing stunning work defending a relentless attack down the left side. Overall a fantastic game with everyone performing well, a sentiment obviously felt by other members of the team as MOM today went to the whole team! So congratulations to Darcie G, Jemma Badger Gerri B, Nicola Chaplin, Charlotte C, Ianne Delos Reyes, Megan H, Gillian Lamb, Jane Orchard, Suzanne Reng, Bethany Sullivan, Nisu S and Caitlin T - well done all and here's to a wonderful 2-1 result that puts the 5s within one point of second place in the league.
Fantastic win by Ladies 3s over Southampton
Without the captain or the coach on the side AFHC L3 took on a strong looking Southampton side. With Graham's defence exercises in mind though AFHC were strong in the back. An amazing performance by Di Taylor, returning from injury with excellent distribution and finishing the score off with a hat-trick! There were also some great midfield manoeuvres creating chances for the 4-1 win. Massive thanks to goal keeper coach Ian for coming down to support the keeper. Massive thanks to all who supported the team both on and off the pitch.
Mens 1s beat Winchester yet again
Men’s 1’s went 1-0 down early on to Winchester 2’s but quickly fired back after Ian Metcalfe concerted a Westy drag. AFHC deservedly got a second after some beautiful play and precise passing down the left-hand channel which found Mr.Whelan who delicately cushioned it to Ian for his second. Frustratingly, Winchester got a second before half time to level it up. AFHC started out the blocks hard in the second half and after some nice play a cross by Rob was deflected by a defender into his own net. After a well worked press Luke won the ball passed it to Rob who played it to Ian for the hat-trick. Some resilient defending saw the game out and a deserved 3pts and the double over Winch! Mom Joe Whelan for a brilliant performance up top.
Ladies 2s lost 2-0 to Basingstoke in a tough match
So another week of good availability, saw us travelling away to Basingstoke in what we had predicted would be a tough match.  The match was tough from the start and in the first 10 minutes AFHC took Basingstoke by surprise as they controlled the play. However, Basingstoke soon settled down and played some lovely hockey. In defence AFHC were under a lot of pressure and Jess, Penny, Lucy and Hannnah managed to keep breaking down the play and were tight with their marking. As always Anwen was well disciplined in goal and made some good saves. AFHC conceded several short corners and their first goal came from a well struck hit to the corner of the goal. Getting the ball through Basingstoke’s midfield was tricky, although Ella and Caitlyn managed some good balls forward. Just before half time Basingstoke scored in open play which meant 2-0 at half time. The second half definitely saw some better play for AFHC, with Jodie distributing the ball well and Evie penetrating their defence. Chanel and Katherine managed to cut out some good balls and it was good see new player, Becky, getting involved.
Throughout the second half AFHC looked stronger and calmer and Basingstoke did not score again. So, the final score was 2-0 to Basingstoke, but again team spirit was good and it was a determined style of play from everyone. After the match several Basingstoke players said AFHC had made it difficult for them and made them work for the win (which I think is a compliment!!) MOM was awarded to Anwen for some crucial saves.
Ladies 1s lost 1-0 to Eastcote in a mid-season friendly warm-up
Ladies 1s played a friendly game against Eastcote who are in the parallel division to AFHC (South Div 3A). Down to 11.5 players before the start of the game, the ladies piled on the pressure in the first 15 minutes. It was unfortunate that during this spell Eastcote won a PC, which was beautifully converted by way of a drag flick. Eastcote then had the turn of the pressure, but the ladies held on and survived a few more PCs. The match was very much equal throughout the game, with AFHC having some attacking pressure before the final whistle. Score ended 0-1 to Eastcote, however showed that the ladies kept up fitness over the Christmas period and looking forward to our league campaign resuming.
Ladies 4s lost to top of the table Basingstoke
In a tough match it is safe to say AFHC battled hard and up until the 57th minute held the league leaders and the game should have been a draw. However, some slick work led to a goal from Basingstoke and another quickly followed - it was a shame as AFHC played very well and defended exceptionally but they just had the edge - hence their position and they’ve not lost a match all season! So onwards and upwards. MOM to Emily and Charlotte Watson

Match reports weekend 12th/13th January 2019

U18 boys beat Southampton 8-3 in the cup

The U18 boys team travelled down to Southampton today to play in the cup. They took an early lead through Jamie, and looked to add to it, but Southampton managed to pull one back levelling it to 1-1. AFHC carried on, with Josh deflecting in a goal on the back post restoring our lead before Joe W got his second. After half time AFHC continued to push but they were awarded a short corner, from which they won a flick which was converted. AFHC carried on but lost Matt and Jamie to Hampshire training 15 mins before the end. After this AFHC played much simpler and better hockey, trying to keep possession. They managed to score another goal, but we continued attacking and, in the end, AFHC won 8-3. The back 4 were solid throughout the game and made it difficult for their attack and Matt made some great saves. Goals: Joe W finished with 4, Josh-2, Rob C-1 and Jamie-1.
Mens 3s lost 3-2 to Chichester in a tight match
Mens 3s played top of the table Chichester 4 at Heath End today. AFHC started well enough albeit generally on the defensive, but with sufficient threat up front that Chichester were not having it all their own way. Unfortunately, Chichester took the lead after a cruel deflection from Rory running out for a short corner sent Matt Cobbald the wrong way. A few changes at half time gave AFHC more purpose going forward and they deservedly equalized: Tom Haworth-Edwards deflecting a Roy Lawler through ball. The second half was even-stevens and was heading for a draw when with 5 mins to go they scored a second goal. It is testament to this team that they did not give up and Adam scored a great solo goal to bring AFHC level again with just 2mins left. That would have been a fair result but unfortunately with just a minute to go they took the lead again. So tough. Still AFHC didn't give up and won a short at the final whistle, Faz made a great pass to me Andy Chadwick at the far post but the deflection was just wide. Final score 3-2 to Chichester. This was always going to be a tough game, but the team can be proud of how much everyone contributed today. Onward and upward.
Ladies 2s lost 2-1 to Eastleigh
This Saturday was our first match back after the Christmas break and it was against Eastleigh who are in a similar position to us in the division (near the bottom!!). AFHC had a squad of 15, which meant Kirsty would not be lonely in the dug-out this week!!! Our pre-match team talk was positive and each receiving the motivational cards was such a lovely idea and let every player know they are a valued member of the team, in what has been a tough season so far. The game was fairly even throughout despite a slow sand-based pitch, which took a while to get used to. After a slow start, Eastleigh went ahead but it gave AFHC the determination to play some better hockey. Gradually the team was penetrating their defence more and Chanel managed to keep battling away towards the goal, with the final touch of the ball, just before it crossed the line, going to Jess and levelling the score at 1-1. Once the match had settled down a bit the game opened up and there was some great play in the midfield. Amy, Hannah, Penny and Lucy were all strong in defence and Anwen made some crucial saves. Unfortunately, AFHC were caught off guard and Eastleigh came back with another goal which meant it was 2-1 at half time. Going into the second half, however, AFHC was immediately playing some good hockey. The combination of passing between Ella, Caitlyn, Katherine and Amanda worked well and having a bit more time on the ball (compared to previous matches!) meant they could control the midfield more effectively and build play forwards. Eastleigh had some experienced players who held the ball well and also waited to calmly intercept AFHC passes. However, AFHC dominated the second half with a lot of attacking play. Libby, Ridgey and Caitlin put pressure on their defence and created lots of goal scoring opportunities. This was helped by some lovely stick work by Emma. In this match, however, AFHC just weren’t in Eastleigh’s D. Nonetheless, lots of positives can be taken from this match - good communication, supporting each other and everyone running non-stop (plus a good team spirit!!). MOM was awarded to Amanda.
Ladies 3s lost 5-0 to Portsmouth
Ladies 3s took the first slot at Heath End this morning, against a much-revised US Portsmouth team from the one they faced back in September. They fought hard, with some great movement on and off the ball, passing, saves, tackles, etc The final score line does not do justice to the way the team played. Yes, there were blips, but overall they should be proud of how they played. The team were unlucky when the umpire blew for a short corner just as Kate's shot was going into the goal, so the goal didn't stand. The short then got upgraded to a flick when one of their defenders blocked it on the line with their body and their goalie was able to save the flick. MoM was a unanimous vote for Lily - fantastic all round play and never giving up.  Well done everyone. Onwards and upwards.
Ladies 4s lost 4-0 to Poole
Road trip - so a long drive for a loss! But spirits high as ever in the Ladies 4s! The match was tough and in the first 15 it could have been anyone’s - but Poole were slick and all goals were worth it! Catherine Powell was MOM some incredible saves – Carol McEvoy clocked a spectacular stick save - but the whole team battled hard. AFHC eventually lost 4-0 but the team is still 5th and always worth remembering they beat F&E 9-0. Onwards to next week and the league leaders Basingstoke.

Match reports and news – weekend 8th/9th December 2018.

Girls Under-16s beat Haslemere 6-0!
The girls under-16s travelled to Haslemere on Sunday. The team arrived in good time, which meant plenty of time for warm up and preparation. The game started in bright (blinding) sunshine and was fast and furious from the start. It was pleasing to see AFHC come out so positively and to look like they really wanted to win the match. Within the first 5 minutes they had created goal scoring opportunities and put pressure on their defence, which appeared to surprise Haslemere. The pressure of breaking through from midfield into the D resulted in the first 2 goals which both came from Caitlin. The next goal was an own goal but was awarded to Ella as she had been the final AFHC player to touch the ball. AFHC’s substitutions worked well and gave players a chance to rest for a few minutes, as it was tiring match. The Haslemere goalkeeper was forced to make some great saves and this kept the score down to 3-0 at half time. A constructive half-time team talk set out some objectives for the second half, and it was pleasing to see these put into action. In particular “hunting in pairs” and supporting one another in open play. The second half was a strong team performance with goals coming from Penny (one of her short corner strikes!), Chloe and Sophie. The defence remained composed and distributed the ball well and midfielders continued to run, run and run!! MOM was awarded to Ella and was well deserved for her supportive play, continuous running, tracking back and well-timed tackles! So the final score was a satisfying 6 -0 to AFHC. It was a great game to watch, with the attitude of the girls being positive throughout. They have definitely grown in confidence as a team and currently are undefeated this season …… and remain top of the league table. Thank you to Dan for managing the team today and passing on his words of wisdom and to Catherine for assisting him with substitutions etc.
Under-12 boys beat Basingstoke 4-2
Great play by the U-12 boys who beat Basingstoke 4-2 at Heath End this morning. The first third was equal on both sides and it was Basingstoke that went 1-0 up before a slick corner routine was finished by Jerome Sturridge to bring it level. In the second third the boys tightened up the marking at the back and in midfield. The pressure told on Basingstoke who were finding it increasingly difficult to clear their lines. With the speed and quality of Noah Hewett and Ben Turrell up front that was only going to hurt Basingstoke eventually and so it proved, 3 goals in quick succession, 2 for Ben and 1 for William Stephens, taking the shots into the final third 4-1 up. They took the foot off the gas toward the end and Basingstoke pulled one back late on but all in all, this was a solid and accomplished performance.
Mens 1s beat EUHC London Gamblers 3-1
The Men's 1s recorded a much needed win against bottom side EUHC London Gamblers in their final game before the winter break.
AFHC had the game in control, but when Gamblers did pull it back to 2-1 midway through the second half, there was a sense the game could go either way, however Scott Perry in the final game of his five week cameo for the club slotted home to seal the points.
AFHC had a 1-0 lead at half time thanks to a precision drag flick from Perry just inside the right upright. AFHC will feel that they should have had a more substantial lead though, as after weathering a good start by Gamblers, they took control and enjoyed a great amount of possession. Too often though the midfield tried to force the ball through central areas and with the forwards also not offering enough depth inside the circle it was too easy for the Gamblers defenders to manage. On the occasions they did get the ball wide and in behind the Gamblers back line, they opened up chances and for a better final ball would have surely scored one or two more. One point when the final ball from such a scenario was on the money Aaron Buchanan missed an empty goal. The message was clear that this should be the method of attack in the second half, especially through Jonny Groves or Rob Jervis on the right. The teenage partnership of Joe Whelan and Jamie Weston in the A&F central defence looked assured throughout, with Whelan making a couple of very smart tackles. Weston scored a drag-flick via a deflection off a trailing stick of a running defender to make it 2-0, before Gamblers broke for their goal which came from a ball from the left that Ed Rushmere ended up putting in his own goal in a desperate attempt to intercept the pass. Ian Metcalfe could have made it 4-1 shortly after Perry had scored the third. Despite close attention from two Gamblers defenders he managed to squeeze through a gap to fashion the chance but a poor effort was put straight at the ‘keeper. Still, good to finally have a win after a run of defeats.
Mens 2s beat Fareham 5s 2-1
The Men's 2s faced off against rock bottom Fareham 5s - the second of two Fareham teams in their league. AFHC may have taken the game a little for grated especially given the fact we scored within a minute of push back! A scrappy first half ended with the score 2-1 to us goals for Sam and Oli! Not a great second half from all but we held on for 3 more points in a goalless second half! Mom went to Neil Metcalfe.
Mens 3s extend their winning streak beating Southampton 3s 5-3
Goals from Rob Corbin, Tom Haworth-Edwards, Will Hewett and 2 from myself. This was a tough game played under appalling conditions, but the lads did not buckle and there were some standout performances. MOM shared this week between their dynamic fullbacks Rory Whelan and Charlie Aylott. Thanks to Oli Holder for umpiring a difficult game.
Ladies 1s lost 1-0 to Teddington
Ladies 1’s last match of the season before the Christmas break saw them away to Teddington. With only 12 players this week they knew they were going to have to step up and work for one another. The game started well with some lovely play from both teams, with a very back-and-forth first half, Teddington managed to get a short corner from which they capitalised with a well worked and practised routine. Leaving the score 1-0 at half time. Going into the second half it was very apparent that Teddington had many more legs left than AFHC, with their 16 player squad. Even though the score remained 1-0 to Teddington, it was a great performance from the whole team, bring on the second half of the season! MoM - This week goes to Kate Cooper for some exceptional superhuman saves.
Ladies 3s beat Fareham 2-0
Ladies 3s go into the Christmas break on the back of a win against Fareham and having moved up a place in the table. What a brilliant game to finish this half of the season. A great team effort with lots more talking / shouting at the back, tight marking for most of the match and great passing. It didn't all go AFHC’s way and there was plenty of defending to be done, including some fantastic saves from Debbie Ridger in goal, earning her MotM. Our first goal came from Ellie, taking a strike as soon as she entered the D. AFHC went into half time just one goal up, but with a positive team talk from Graham, we knew we could hold on. When the goalie mistook Kate for the ball and wiped her out, Joelle stepped up and put the P-flick in the back of the net to put us 2 up. Fareham weren't going to give up and fought hard to get one back, but despite quite a number of short corners in their favour, the defence held strong and Fareham had to accept defeat.
Ladies 2s lost 1-0 to Fareham in a tightly contested match
Ladies 2s had another early start down in Fareham. They started off strongly and held up a lot of Fareham’s play. The team’s main focus for the first half was to not concede a goal in the first 5 minutes like previous games and they smashed it by not conceding any goals in the first half! The second half saw some great passing from AFHC, lovely linking play in the middle from Katherine and Ella and a few breaks up front resulting in Libby very nearly scoring! Unfortunately, AFHC just couldn’t get the ball in the goal, and Fareham managed to score a very messy goal that only just went over the line with Hannah very nearly getting her stick to it! MOM went to Penny for some great pivot play at the back and defensive work.

Fantastic home festival for the U8s & U10s Minis
Fantastic fun at our U8s &U10s festival on Sunday at the Army Astros. Thank you so much to everyone who helped out with umpiring, team managing, BBQ, teas and coffees. The AFHC teams did really well overall, especially given almost the whole squad was in action including a number of new players and 6-year-olds. What a fab bunch of kids. In Fiona’s team there was some lovely defensive play and passing from Clara, Minnie and Savi. Tenacious tackling from Naomi. Cillian was our top goal scorer. Innes, Forbes and Alex were all great at getting stuck in and made some lovely deft passes. Big praise to Sam for his relentless and impressive marking, and great play in general. All in all, great hockey!
The U-10s showed great attitude, smiles and determination. Archie Gritton took a stick to the head, Sapphy a stick to the knee - but they both went off and came back on smiling.  Kaitlin was legendary in defence, Jack and Robert played their socks off in every game and Isobel and Alexia gave it everything .... just a brilliant polite determined helpful little squad.

Match reports weekend of 1st and 2nd December

U18 girls beat Romsey 3-0
The under 18 girls faced Romsey today at home and after a solid warm up and team talk from Catherine Powell and Ellie Tarsey they got off to a strong start. Multiple short corners led to a great goal from Sammy Powell and after some strong play the score remained 1-0 at half time. AFHC began the second half with the same energy and high intensity, leading to another short corner and a goal for Sammy. Just minutes later AFHC won another short corner and a great strike from Emma Porter gave them another goal. Great play from everyone meant that the final score was 3-0.
U18 boys draw 1-1 with Trojans before beating Winchester 2-1
The U18 boys faced Winchester and Trojans in their second match day of the year. First up was Trojans, who began strongly pressuring the AFHC defence. Despite conceding multiple penalty corners, the boys kept it at 0-0. AFHC then made It 1-0 with a drag from JT and it stayed that way until with a minute left they aerialed it into a crowded D and got an equaliser, final score 1-1.
AFHC then went straight into their second game vs Wincheste. They started well going 2-0 up with a goal from Joe Whelan and an own goal by Winchester. They stayed strong for the rest of the game until Winchester scored from a short corner in the final seconds of the game, Final score 2-1. Mom was Bobby Wollen.
Mens 1s lose 1-0 to Wanderers 2’s
Aldershot & Farnham fell to a third successive defeat as a nicely taken reverse stick goal by Wanderers midway through the second half decided a rather dull game in Kennington Park. With their final game against bottom side EUHC Gamblers London this weekend, AFHC will have some work to do. They now sit 10th in the table, but every game they play seems to be tight. Five of their six defeats have been by the solitary goal, so it’s the fine margins that are costing them but they must quickly find a way to be more creative and eradicate some sloppy errors. As ever, AFHC were disciplined, difficult to beat and break down and an aggressive press gave them an early foothold in the game. They showed signs of threatening early on with Rob Jervis causing problems on the right.
Second placed Wanderers 2’s soon worked them out though and AFHC didn’t offer too many alternative options. Too often they tried to attack in central areas when they would have been better served trying to get in behind the Wanderers attack from wider areas. In the end AFHC failed to have a shot at goal in the whole game. Wanderers had a handful of short corners and a couple of other attempts saved by Andrew Wilkie and on the whole were deserving of their win without being overly impressive. A&F’s chances of getting an equalizer were dealt a blow when with ten minutes left Dean Harrison made an over-the-top challenge to get a five minute yellow card, which was then upgraded for the rest of the game following dissent.
Mens 3s win 4-1 against Fareham
Men’s 3s had a good game away at Fareham. Following a slow start AFHC conceded an early goal to make it 1-0 Fareham. However, they fought back to go 1-1 and then after another goal went into half time 2-1 up. In the second half Fareham started to put the pressure on, but the defence held firm to stop them pulling level. AFHC then pushed forward and went 3-1 ahead with a great goal from Adam. AFHC then scored almost straight after to make the final result 4-1. Overall great performances from all, particularly Matt and Rob. A great result keeping us at the top of the table.
Men’s 2s lose 2-0 to US Portsmouth
Men's 2 faced off against US Portsmouth. In a highly anticipated game for their coach who seemed to know more of the opposition's names as his own team! This inside knowledge of the opposition didn't help at all as we fell to our second defeat of a very mid table season so far! First half was pretty even, with chances few and far between, second half AFHC was a bit slow out the blocks and conceded very quickly! The team had a lot of possession without creating many clear cut chances, a second scrappy goal for Portsmouth followed making it very hard for AFHC to get back into the game! They were given the perfect opportunity to do that with a penalty flick which captain Alan Coote decide to put straight at the keeper! Game over 2-0 Not a happy coach! Mom was Samuel Fuentes.
Ladies 3s lose 6-0 to Havant
Ladies 3s had yet another early start to travel down to Havant. AFHC didn't start off well, conceding 2 goals within the first 5 minutes and a further 2 during the first half. The second half was a lower tally (2 more) but as the game went on they improved and we also got into our stride more. It was a tough game, which we were expecting, but played in good spirit and we never gave up trying. There were a number of nominations for MotM, including Ellie M (constant high work rate, good passing and general all round play), Charlotte (for marking their star player out of the game in the second half), Charlie (for lots of great saves, despite the final scoreline), but it ended up being shared between Danni (for excellent goal line clearances!) and Lily (for awesome all round play).
Men’s 5s beat Men’s 6s 5-1
M5s v M6s derby day. All the talk beforehand of a mix n’ match to keep things even disappeared following the 6s gaining their third attacking short in the first five minutes. For the next 50 minutes there was only one side looking like they either wanted to win or had the ability to do so. Which again, wasn’t the 5s.  Great game from a very youthful 6s, very ably and well marshalled by Drew, Ben, James and Max, Ed doing all he needed to do when required. Final score, however, ended up an extremely flattering 5-1 to men’s 5s (Ian 3, Martin 2 for 5s versus a well worked goal from the 6s). Was 1-1 for most of the game, the balance of play and goals only shifting in the final 10 minutes. All said though, a very good well fought out, entertaining game.
Ladies 1s lose 4-0 to Haslemere
It was game of two halves. It was a grotty Saturday afternoon. AFHC arrived at Haslemere and had a decent warm up, but their start was delayed by five minutes. Fairly quickly, Haslemere gained a short corner and managed to slot a drag flick to the left of the keeper beating the post player. A short time later, another short corner was saved, only for Kate to back heel the ball into the back of the goal. Things were not going AFHC’S way, Haslemere made it 3-0. AFHC were galvanized to change the tide of play and some attacking runs gained them a couple of corners. The well worked routines didn't pay off this time, however, and soon Haslemere were back down AFHC’s end making it 4-0 at half time. After Aaron's constructive half-time feedback, AFHC started the second half with more intensity and started to work better as a team, holding their structure and marking more closely. The play went from end to end resulting in hard running from the midfield and the forwards. The only short corner in the second half ended with an injury for the opposition defender coming from their overexcited goalie hitting her in the head. The final score was 4-0 to Haslemere. Man of the match went to Loz for all round awesome play.
Ladies 2s lose 4-2 against Havant 2s
A bit of a wet day for the game against Havant and the start time was slightly delayed, but AFHC was ready for action!! The team quickly settled into a smooth pattern of play and we looked settled in defense. A switch of position between Amanda and Katherine was the right decision and enabled the play to build up well. Havant had a good mix of experienced and younger players. They took their chances well and were 3-0 up at half time. However, it was pleasing to see that AFHC remained positive and throughout the second half they played some great hockey. They were playing well “as a team”, passing and linking up with each other. They created more chances and were even awarded short corners in the second half……and eventually…..the momentum that they had created resulted in two fantastic goals. One goal from a short corner which was struck by Penny and deflected in by Libby. The other goal was scored by Caitlin Mason who took her opportunity well. The final score was a 4-2 to Havant, but such an enjoyable game to play in and the team spirit was great this week. Hopefully we can take this style of play and positive attitude into our next match. MOM was awarded to Katherine for some strong and intelligent play in midfield.
Ladies 4s lost 3-2
Well let’s just take today as a valuable lesson in how not to start a match! The opposition should have started badly given they had a tyre blow-out on the way to the game but oh no - they only had 8/9 players and dominated the first half getting 3 past AFHC! So that’s that - AFHC forgot the first half and came out fighting for an awesome second half - 2 goals from Katja Jackson and they were close to getting a point but not meant to be. MOM the awesome Sarah Sitwell.

24th & 25th November - match reports

Mixed Cup Team beat Guildford 3-1 on penalty flicks. Through to the next round!
The Mixed Cup team started their England National Cup competition today at Heath End against a Guildford side. A youthful looking side for AFHC, sprinkled with a handful of senior players to keep them on the straight and narrow, kept Guildford at bay until 5 minutes after half time when they scored. This spurred AFHC to respond within almost 50 seconds when Max Long threw himself at the far post to deflect a Robert Jervis cross. AFHC then took the lead when Max again slotted a goal past their keeper. Guildford rallied and equalised with 5 minutes to go, meaning that penalty strokes were needed to settle the cup tie. Just like last year’s first round cup experience, Kate Cooper again stepped up to save three of Guildford’s shots and AFHC won 3-1 on flicks. The next round awaits.
Under 16 girls beat Basingstoke 7:1
U16s girls had great win against Basingstoke on Sunday winning 7:1. Some excellent individual skills and brilliant team play including some awesome one twos in front of goal.
Boys Under 12 beat Winchester 6-1
An early start for the u12 boys against Winchester B this morning. Despite only having 10 men they managed to dominate the game and came out comfortable 6-1 winners. The scoreline is testament to the great team play that the boys have developed in recent games, underlined by the tenacity and thoughtful distribution of Jerome Sturridge and Oli Street in midfield to feed the pace of Ben Turrell, Jack Stevens and Noah Hewett in a skilled attack. When called upon the defensive line of Felix Taylor, William Stephens, Joe Telford and Freddie Pocock dealt with Winchester attacks with confidence backed up by James Badger in goal. Well played boys.
Boys Under-16 beat Alton 1-0
Boys u16 ground out a 1-0 win against Alton today. The hockey in the first half mirrored the weather and the shots looked subdued, not quite getting the finish they needed whilst allowing Alton several chances at the other end. The second half was more like the impressive hockey the boys have played in previous fixtures and Alton found it harder and harder to match the tempo and slick passing game. Despite the shots dominance in possession, Alton were proving hard to break down whilst their goalkeeper was putting in a strong case for man of the match. A sublime forward ball from Bobby Woolen to Rob Corbin eventually split the Alton defence, Rob keeping a cool head to give Spike Stevens a tap in. Many thanks to Geoff Smith for managing and Malcolm for umpiring.
Mens 1s lost 3-2 to Camberley & Farnborough
Aldershot & Farnham slipped to another narrow defeat at home to Camberley & Farnborough and for the second week running they came away from a game in which they dominated play without any points. Camberley just had the three chances in the game and scored them all and from AFHCs point of view the goals they conceded were all rather soft. The first goal Camberley scored to put themselves 1-0 up left AFHC rather aggrieved. A ball was hit towards the circle but straight towards the midriff of Ed Rushmere. The umpire didn’t deem it to be dangerous so allowed play to go on, this caught the home side by surprise and allowed the Camberley forward to strike into the goal from the top of the circle. AFHC restored parity with a Scott Perry drag flick, before Camberley restored their one goal lead going into half time. AFHC were too slow to pick up their men after coughing up the ball and the visitors were able to make three passes inside the circle before slotting home. An aggressive press by AFHC became more effective in the second half and saw them win the ball back regularly. They kept believing in their process and dominated possession, with Johnny Thompson having an effective game in the central midfield, but despite this AFHC were unable to make best use of a man advantage as Camberley saw a midfielder sin binned for a deliberate back stick. But a lack of cutting edge and calm finishing ultimately cost AFHC. Despite their dominance in the play they were unable to open up the Camberley defence enough. Perry did have a clear chance from the top of the ‘D’ but failed to make a good enough connection. Jonny Groves found the equalizer with a firmly hit short corner strike which was reward for an effervescent performance by the experienced forward. AFHC were then reduced to ten men following an elbow and dissent from Perry and were made to pay for this as well as their lack of creativeness in attack as Camberley broke to get the winner with five minutes left.
Mens 3s win 8-1 against Portsmouth & Southsea
Aldershot Mens 3’s played bottom of the League Portsmouth and Southsea today. We got off to a quick start, breaking down the slowest back four in the League. Rob C got the first goal from a short corner, and with other goals in the first half including a wonder strike from Ollie. Andy also got a goal in the first half, making it a half time score of 4-1. In the second half we continued to play with a high intensity and Will, Lemmy and Tom added to the score giving us a final score 8-1. A good save from Matt at the end to stop them scoring. 6 games undefeated and 5 wins on the bounce. Up to 4th in the League table and just 3 points off 3rd.
Ladies 5s beat Fleet & Ewshot 3 4-1
Today was another smasher for the Ladies 5's at home v Fleet & Ewshot, although it started with a very nervy and scrappy first half, we were still 2-0 up at the break. Di's half time chat must have done the world of good as we came back calm and strong and did the best passing we've done all season, much like a well-oiled (and trained) team :So we ended up with an impressive 4-1 win, goals from Suzanne Reng, Caitlin Taylor, Izzy Elliot and Gerri Besgrove. Man of the Match went to Jane Orchard for the most running a person could possibly do in a hockey match. Well done all, it’s an honour to be part of this team, both on and off the pitch. Onwards and upwards ladies
Ladies 3s drew 1-1 with Andover 2s
Ladies 3s were the last of the ladies sides to play today and with plenty of players unavailable both higher and lower, half the team were on their second game of the day. Added to that the lateness of most arrivals, I nearly had a heart attack - only 6 players at the pitch with 15 minutes to pushback
We went 1-0 down quite early on, from not quite being awake/switched on. But this woke us up.
For the rest of the game we fought hard. Graham mixed things up at half time, ensuring that their star player was marked out of the game. Andover had a couple of shorts but otherwise didn't look too dangerous. We had plenty of shots just going wide and then Lily managed to slot one home, with a bit of help from a defender, who Kate pressured into the error very nicely. Lily was Man of the Match – well done!
Ladies 1s drew 0-0 with Horsham
Like every other home match this season, the ladies 1’s arrived at the club house for another inspirational talk from Aaron in the damp and dreary. The match started well with some great running and passing. We soon realised this was a very strong Horsham team, meaning we knew we had to stay strong and work together as a team. With a few cards for them and a fair share of short corners for either team the score remained 0-0. Unlike the score line says, it was great team performance!
Man of the Match went to Ellie for some good tackling, mainly for getting hit in the chest and not complaining for once! Special mention to Rosie for her non stop running all match!!
Ladies 4s lost 4-2 to Fleet & Ewshot.
Well that was an exciting game ... where’s the jumpshot you cry? Alas missing this week but an awesome game of hockey was played ... we knew F&E would be tough - a team of fast youngsters and skilful players kept the game end to end from the first whistle ... Jenny Bailey took us into the lead within 57seconds! And then we battled and battled - they scored an equaliser - game on! Then I (hands up) got caught out when giving advice and their unmarked player pounced and scored! A quick third followed and yikes! Then a brilliant one two work with Cas Bush and Caitlin Taylor (working tirelessly) saw us pull one back 3-2 ... god we then battled but it wasn’t meant to be - and F&E slipped a 4th home! Man of the Match went to Charlotte Watson for tireless work but the whole team battled - it was a great game just a shame no jumpshot to reflect our efforts!
Ladies 2s lost 5-0 to Andover
After an early start the Ladies 2s travelled to Andover today. With some additional recruits we set off in a positive mood. We started off slowly and conceded an early goal, but gradually we settled down and started to play some better hockey. Andover were strong in defence and prevented us breaking through. It was great to see Kate and Caitlin forcing the ball forwards and creating some attacking moves. In centre midfield, Chanel supported them well and linked effectively with Jodie (even though she was not allowed to wear her hat!!!). Ella played confidently and was always available as a connection between defence and attack – as well as chasing after endless balls. In the first half we seemed to put ourselves under pressure and they attacked continually down their left side of the pitch. Hannah remained composed (we won’t mention her Green Card) and then sustained a ball to the face in the second half, which must have hurt. Andover’s goals seemed to come from short corners, although not all from straight strikes. Penny, Lucy and Amy were well organised and distributed the ball well from defence. It was just a case of trying to break through their ring of midfielders. The final 5-0 score line did not reflect the game and there were positives to be taken from the match. It was good to see the team trying out things that we had practiced in training.
18th November - Under 8s festival at Alton - fantastic performance!
The U8s played at Alton's festival this morning and put on a tremendous performance! Head coach Fiona is so proud of every one of them. Team A won every match and didn't concede a single goal. Team B also played fantastically and the only match they lost was the one against Team A! The Farnham Herald was also impressed, describing the intra-club match as the best game he'd seen that morning, with both teams spacing out and passing beautifully. How awesome! Well done all. Keep up the great work!

17th November: A mixed weekend of results for the club, with some great wins and some tough losses.

Ladies 4s beat West Meon 2-0
Ladies 4s took on West Meon and after a quick never seen before kit change for the oppo - basically turning their shirts inside out - off we went. It was a quick game from the start...half time the score was 0-0 with neither side being able to take the lead - West Meon were brilliant in using quick movements and catching us out every now and again but Catherine Powell dealt calmly with everything sent her way - a break allowing Fenella Holmes to score took us 1-0 up and then some lovely play instigated by Sophie D through Saskia and Charlotte Clive led to Emily M striking a deciding goal home - brilliant game!
Mens 5s beat Basingstoke 5-2
The Mens 5s met Basingstoke away and began well with Jimmy settling early nerves with a reverse from the edge. We let in a pretty cheap one shortly after and it looked like a long slog ahead. They were playing with two skillful youngsters upfront and everyone else playing in their own half...tricky and testing for Nige, Drew and Will at our back, but they handled it admirably with a bit to spare...and a solid wall to overcome if we were going to break them down. As it was we produced our slickest passage of play over a ten-minute spell leading up to half time...further goals from Ian and Daz 2 giving us a solid 4-1 turn at the break. Second half wasn’t spectacular, but Mike kept them stretched at the back, George marauded from sweeper and Doug and Daniel kept them gainfully employed out wide. Martin nailed down bottom diamond on a guest appearance there and Rupert looked like he’d never been away in goal. Final score 5-2, Daz completing his hat-trick. Great hard-working team game again, everyone playing for each other...so no MOM. Very hard to find anyone for the lesser medal either.
Mens 3s beat Salisbury 3-0
A great performance from the men’s 3’s today against Salisbury, coming away with a 5-0 win. After a rocky 10 minutes the team pulled together with early goals from Tom and Adam which helped the team settle in. A late goal in the first half from Andy increased the pressure on the opposition. Throughout the 2nd half the pressure was sustained with excellent play from the defence: Charlie, Sam and Rory. Another 2 goals from Andy and Adam sealed the match. Great play from all, bringing our winning streak up to 4 matches.
Mens 2s beat Winchester 8-1

Men’s 2s played the second of two Winchester teams in our league. With most of the team only arriving with about 5 mins until push back, our warm up left a lot to be desired! However this did not seem to affect our performance and we quickly took a 4-0 lead with 2 goals from Jackson Brown and 1 each for Chris Edwards and Isaac! A good first half with a lot of space for our forwards! A slow start to the second half let the opposition score a goal against the run of play! However, another 4 goals followed for AFHC with another 2 for Chris Edwards and 1 each for Alan Coote and Samuel Fuentes. That made Chris’s first hat trick of the season - no prizes for guessing MOM, his second week in a row.
Ladies 5s lost 4-0 against Basingstoke 7s
Less good news for the Ladies 5s who had the early shift today with a 9am push back at Yateley v Basingstoke 7s. Unfortunately, they lost 4:0 but this is no way near to reflecting the quality of the play. With pretty evenly matched sides the tussle was in the middle of the pitch, sadly we lost an early goal to wicked deflection high over all of our heads, and despite crafting wonderful breaks on numerous occasions, thanks to the speed and agility of MOM Megan Holmes, we were unable to get the goal back before they scored again quickly on the return from half time. A tough match but one we can learn a lot from we will regroup and come back stronger next week and when we meet then again we will show them how we can really play.
Ladies 1s lost 3-2 against Southampton
Ladies 1s played a tight match against Southampton. It was very close throughout, but Southampton snatched the 3-2 win with a last minute short corner.
Ladies 3s lost 3-2 to Trojans
Another early start for the 3's away at Trojans. Putting into practice out our training and with a good starting lineup we had a strong start. The first half ended 0-0 with us having had a couple of unlucky strikes on goal and a strong defence. After halftime trojans flew off the block after having good instructions from their coach, scoring 2 goals in 10 minutes. However our determination resulted in us scoring with a strong attack by Jo finished off by Caroline, which left it 2-1. Trojans scored again which we were soon responded to with an attack on goal where Caroline's flick over the goalie was unfortunately picked up by a defender. Caroline continued fighting and scored again. The final score was 3-2 to Trojans. A well fought match by all and a good team effort. Elicia Seebold received MoM for strong defending and picking up of the ball.

Sept 2016: Ian Jennings MBE appointed as Men's first team coach

Picture
Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club (AFHC) have appointed Ian Jennings MBE (Jenno) as Men’s first team coach for the 2016/17 season.

Jenno, who has lived locally for over 35 years, gained 38 caps for England during his international career and has also coached England Women’s Teams and England U21 and U18 Men.

His main focus will be elite development of the Men’s section to enable AFHC to push for promotions and help players achieve their full potential. He will fit in this new position around his current duties for Indian Gymkhana.

Jenno said “Aldershot and Farnham are a growing grassroots club with exciting goals. But they don’t just have a great vision; they have a willingness and capacity to achieve.  My role will be to guide them in the strategies and skills necessary for them to reach and exceed these goals.”  He added “They are also my local club and I often run across the guys in town.  I’d like to think I’m putting something back in to the community.  It will also be nice to only have to travel three minutes to home games!”

Aldershot and Farnham are a thriving club now putting out 30 teams and hosting almost 350 juniors at their weekly Sunday Hockey Academy.  They are England Hockey ClubsFirst accredited and are based both at Heath End School, Farnham and the Army Hockey Centre, Aldershot.

AFHC Chairman, Nigel Oates commented “Hockey is an amazingly inclusive sport. We put out junior girls and boys sides from almost 60 local schools and colleges, senior men’s and ladies, mixed sides and vets. Our members range from 6 years old to 60.  We aspire, but we have always been a grounded club.  We support everyone in growing steadily to the best of their ability as far as we are able.  We now feel we are ready and in a position to raise the bar even further and Jenno, as a local hero, has the skills, knowledge, experience and respect to help us do it.  He also happened to score 276 National League goals, so we are especially looking forward to him putting that level of performance back into action, but this time in an Aldershot & Farnham shirt!”
