Match Report

Match Report - 03 Oct 2009, Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club Mens 3 beat Isle of Wight 2

The 3s kicked off the league season with an international element to our match - away to the Isle of Wight.

After slick organisation from Captain Budd to get a full team across the water, the game did not start as well as we had anticipated, going a goal down despite packing the midfield.
However, once we settled down and found some shape we scored 3 good goals before half time to lead 3-1. 2 to Lemy and the other to Daz, all the result of some slick passing and movement off the ball.

The opposition’s half-time teamtalk clearly did them a world of good as Bendy, Daz and Lemy linked superbly to put us 4-1 up, merely 45 seconds into the half, and this was despite the home team taking the pushback.

The Shots continued to press and found some great rhythm with Rich and Buddy combining on the left and Tom and Angry combining on the right to stretch the home team. We spent the next 30 mins moving the ball freely round the park, controlling the game to such an extent that the home team were soon arguing amongst themselves and resorting to fruitless football-slide tackles to try and slow us down!

Isle of Wight still managed a few forays into our D, but with Lovey prowling around as though he owned the place, and Chris solid between the sticks a 2nd half clean sheet was inevitable.

A goal apiece from Daz and Lemy sealed the match at 6-1. Daz would undoubtedly have got the team’s second hat-trick of the day with the ball heading his way infront of goal, before Jesus pulled off a marvellous piece of skill - a flying interception in front of his striker – followed by a shot that troubled the post (sadly it was the post of the football goal behind!).

A great start to the season and a solid display from all

Isle of Wight 2 1 - 6 Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club Mens 3

 NameGoalsDetails
1Mike Budd   LB – Relieved to get a full team to the match. Organised the team well and once we settled down, managed to relax and got more and more involved
2Paul Hales   4 FWD – 4 well taken goals. 3 in open play and a fine strike from a short. Must be rare for Lemy to be about 5 years younger than his strike partner
3Darren Brooks   2 FWD – 2 goals and nearly a hat-trick in the dying moments. Some great movement and lay-offs between him and Lemy. A 50 yard pass to himself - which he opted not to chase - suggested he would have not have opposed a 12th man towards the end
4Chris Milsted   CH - Some good linking play, particularly in the 2nd half. And the interception in the dying seconds was a fine pick (just a shame he picked it off Daz).
5Richard Hall   LH – Found lots of space down the left and put some useful crosses in. Also produced what will surely be the footwear of this season despite it being the first match!
6Kriss Tupper   GK – A decent performance despite arriving at the 8.30 am meet straight from working through the night
7Fraser Watson   CH – Picked up MOM award either a) because he realised he was more at home in the defensive D and left the attacking D to those who could shoot or b) so it would be easier for Lemy to talk him into doing the match report
8Simon Parrott   CB – Controlled the defence well with some fine tackles, as well as putting his body on the line – taking a couple of undercuts in the line of duty
9Ben White   SWP – The 5th midfielder. Came forward at every opportunity, on the ball a lot, and threaded some great balls through to the forwards. And on top of that was Bussy for the day (the Bendy-Bus is back despite Boris Johnston’s efforts)
10Chris Granshaw   RH – Solid all round performance with a few marauding runs, and not a hint of anger in sight
11Tom Sommerfelt   RB – After a few initial nerves grew with confidence as the game went on.
12JC Hall   Many thanks JC. Very solid performance with the whistle, and seemingly glad to get the ferry trip out the way early in the season.
