Match Report

Match Report - 24 Oct 2009, Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club Mens 3 lost to Fareham 5

Not alot to say really. Nobody played well. One thing I can say is that we never stopped trying though. Fareham were class in the midfield and upfront but when we actually passed the ball and broke thru their ranks, they werent upto much at the back but it was just the composure to break them down that we more than not lacked. AF3 have to learn quick that this league is about teamwork and quick ball movement. Once we get this into our heads we will be fine. Anyway, game went as follows. Fham start, ball goes straight forward, the AF3 midfield and defence still scratching their baboons. Foul in area. Penalty corner. Slip left. Goal. 2 mins gone. 10 mins later, great tackle on t he reverse by Goose and Fham umpire gives a PF. I honestly dont know why and Fham players at least had the decency to admit that they didnt either. However, the umpire still stands by his decision and ... well .... enough said of that half of the gentlemans with the whistle. Anymore and I get into trouble !! Sounds like it was one way traffic but strangely it wasnt. We had numerous PC's ourselves but the shot went wide or unseen infringementa were blown and that left the score at 3-0 at half time, with ourselves well and truely still in it. But the rest, well that becomes hazy...... We did claw ourselves back into it, for 45 secs, as the new combo upfront combined, with Tubs firing one from the edge of the area which Daz tipped in from 6 inches, but Fham scored straight from the pushback, after yet another disputed call by the umpire allowed Fham to capitalise on the AF defences open mouthed astonishment of the decision given against them. A point to bring up here is the umpiring. Without umpires we cannot play and yes, we havent had the "rub of the green" going for us yet. And goals are being scored against us that simply put, SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ALLOWED eg. 2 players standing next to each other in the AF5m circle take a free hit, which is scored from, are things we have to deal with, especially when the umpire says "you cannot do that. Next time I will disallow it" ...... words fail me. However, we have to play on, not worry about outside decisions and get on with the job of defending our goal. So, Fareham eventually scored 8 and other than an opportunity for Daz on the right post that hit the outside of the sideboard and a Tubs undercut that unfortunately hit the keepers arm, we didnt increase our score. For future games, we just have to learn to defend better and to distribute quicker, with each member of the side having the confidence to play this type of hockey. We also look forward to the eventual return of some missing players to shore up the positions that we are slightly weak in.

It is also good to see that the squad members from last year, now playing 2's, are doing well in the leagues above.
