Match Report - 05 Dec 2009, Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club Mens 1 beat Chichester 4
Aldershot & Farnham completed a comfortable win against bottom side Chichester last Saturday.
Playing within themselves for much of the game, A&F did put together a number of smart moves but on the whole they simply did enough that was required. A&F had a setback in the first minute when Chris Barnes limped off with an injured hamstring meaning that they had to play virtually the whole game with just a bare eleven players.
A number of chances were missed in the first twenty minutes, but the heavy rain was making conditions difficult and it was proving pretty hard to finish off some good moves with the stick feeling like a bar of soap in the hands.
It was no surprise then that the first three goals were all simple tap-ins rather than from thumping strikes. Steve Wicks netted twice and Ian Metcalfe once, with the likes of Jon Attwood, Simon Gillespie and Jonny Groves constantly featuring in the A&F attacks.
Despite the rain halting at halftime the floodgates remained open and another two goals were quickly put away by Ian Metcalfe. Firstly a short corner strike and then a lifted finish from the top of the ‘D’ after some skilful play by Attwood played him in with acres of space and time.
With A&F going through the motions somewhat, Chichester to their credit kept going, but were somewhat handed their consolation goal when a perfectly good pass was left by two A&F players following a mis-communication.
A&F’s final goal was scored by man of the match Jonny Groves whose movement throughout was exceptional. Duck passed to him on the halfway line and beating his man he went on to round the ‘keeper.
