Match Report
Match Report - 10 Oct 2009, Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club Mens 2 drew with Southampton 3
Just a few words... before I promise myself that I have a life and go in to town for a few words.
Comments from Pete MacDonald this week that the Metcalfe's are being mentioned to much in match reports, so I promise no reference to myself this time round.
The match started well... the handsome young skipper winning his fourth toss on the trot... well played that man.
AFHC had push back and within 30 seconds managed to hand the ball back to Southampton who proceeded to force us on to the defensive (also Ian I will try to use the backfoot less frequently this time around). so AFHC were already having to withstand heavy pressure from the Southampton forwards and although defended well and kept it tight, they and the rest of teh team were making it hard for themsleves by trying to play the ball through southampton players... and so jsut handed them the ball back. Randall, Macca, Matt Leman and Hamish keeping it nice and tight at the back.
Unfortunately this alternative style of play from AFHC could not be kept up and eventually Southampton, through a well taken short corner went 1-0 up. A fair result after less than ordinary play from Aldershot.
The latter stages of the first half did see AFHC play some more progressive hockey and even threatened the Southampton 23rd.
After half time, Aldershot looked more attacking and tried to find opportunities to push forward and threaten the Southampton keeper, who pulled off some good saves. Not as good as Hamish Hall though and the continuous last ditch defending by AFHC.
After a while Aldershot found their groove and the big man up front, Jimmy Humphries used some good stick worka dn probably the odd foot as well to win us a penalty flick which was neatly converted by Lee Carter... making a welcome return to the side. 1-1
a draw always looked on the cards... Talking of cards... how could i forget to mention the 9 that were drawn during the match... and all from Pete Yarde... who did look rather dashing in a pair of Lederhosen. 9 cards... two were for AFHC... well done Aaron and Jimmy and 7 were for Southampton... one particular gentleman racking up 1 green and 2 yellows for himself... something suggests that he didnt want to actually play.
So the game finished 1-1 and although it wasnt the ebst display by AFHC, they were happy to take the point on a typically difficult away encounter at Southampton. Full credit to Southampton... who if they ahd kept their heads better probably could have a result more in their favour, but a draw can't be too disapointing.
