Aldershot & Farnham recorded their first win of the season with a 2-0 home win over fellow strugglers Gillingham.
A&F had an early set back with Phil Rushmere limping off with an injured hamstring five minutes in. However, Rory Whelan stepped up with some industrious play in the screen position to help minimise the loss.
A&F were the better team throughout and took the lead fifteen minutes in. Nathan Stanley played a neat ball through to Ian Metcalfe to create a 2 on 1, Metcalfe committed the last man and squared to Jonny Groves to sweep past the goalkeeper.
A&F should have strengthened their position in the game but some lack of care in passing at key times and some wasted chances saw them hold just the one goal lead at the break. Will Hall made one fine save in the A&F goal but had limited other action.
Both teams were having to deal with some questionable umpiring decisions and cards, and it was to their credit that the game remained well spirited.
Midway through the second half A&F got the crucial second goal. Metcalfe intercepting a failed aerial out of defence to put Groves in again, who finished with his second stab at it.
A&F’s level dropped somewhat for the last fifteen minutes but they did enough to survive despite Gillingham hitting the post in a goalmouth scramble.
